Cruise’s stated reason was that he could not move that quickly against the air pressure pushing on his body. He did not refuse wing-walking itself. He performed the broader biplane wing sequence in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which was filmed in mid-air over South Africa.
The request Cruise said he could not meet
According to Digital Trends, which published its account on May 9, 2025, McQuarrie wanted the walk along the biplane wing staged as a rapid crossing, completed in roughly two seconds. Cruise’s objection was to that pace. He told McQuarrie that he could not move that fast against the force of the air.
The distinction is easy to lose. Cruise was refusing a timing requirement, not the wing walk. The walk itself went ahead, and Cruise did it on camera.
How the disagreement was handled
Rather than insist on the speed, Cruise turned the problem back on McQuarrie. He suggested the director go out on the wing himself so he could feel the pressure that Cruise was describing. Digital Trends reports that Cruise then coached McQuarrie through the wing walk in a 20-minute tutorial. The account presents the airflow explanation as Cruise’s own view, not as a separately tested aerodynamic finding.

Two different wing moments
The quick crossing and the wider sequence are easy to confuse, so the table below separates them.
| Element | The quick crossing request | The broader wing-walking sequence |
|---|---|---|
| What was asked or filmed | A very fast walk from one point on the wing to another, in about two seconds (Digital Trends, May 9, 2025) | Walking between the wings of a biplane in mid-air over South Africa, part of The Final Reckoning (The Guardian, May 14, 2025) |
| Cruise’s stated limit | Could not move that quickly against the air pressure on his body (Cruise, as reported by Digital Trends) | No refusal reported; Cruise performed the sequence |
| How it was handled | Cruise asked McQuarrie to feel the pressure himself, then coached him through the walk in a 20-minute tutorial (Digital Trends) | Performed by Cruise during in-flight filming |
| Reported by | Digital Trends | The Guardian, and Digital Trends for the film connection |
A separate moment: exhaustion on the wing
The Guardian’s Cannes report describes a different incident. McQuarrie told the paper that Cruise had pushed himself so hard during the in-flight filming that he could not get back up off the wing. This is not the same event as the quick-crossing request. It is a production anecdote about exhaustion during filming.
