In Tokyo Revengers, the mark is the Japanese character 卍, read manji. It appears in the series’ Japanese title and in the identity of the Tokyo Manji Gang. In Japanese religious and cultural contexts, manji is a Buddhist sign. It looks very similar to the swastika that the Nazi regime appropriated from a related symbol. So the accurate answer is that the Tokyo Revengers mark is a different sign with a different context, but one that international viewers can reasonably read through the Nazi association. The character 卍 is read manji in Japanese. It is one of the most visible Buddhist signs in Japanese temples and religious art, and it is the form most English-language readers recognize as a swastika-like mark. Tracing the glyph’s full origin is beyond what can be established from the sources used here, so this article does not attempt a complete etymology.
Buddhist and Japanese context
A 2024 chapter from IntechOpen’s book Comics and Graphic Novels – International Perspectives, Education, and Culture describes the manji as a Buddhist sign and discusses how the character appears in Tokyo Revengers. That is an academic secondary source, not a statement by the manga’s author or publisher about their intent. It establishes the religious meaning of the sign, not the creators’ reasons for choosing it.

Why it looks like a swastika
The Nazi regime appropriated a related, visually similar symbol, the hakenkreuz, which is the swastika as used in Nazi insignia. The resemblance is the reason many international viewers react to the manji through that history. The IntechOpen chapter makes the same point: the visual similarity can call for special attention when a work is distributed internationally.
Why orientation is not the whole answer
Orientation is one visible difference that people point to when comparing the two marks. It is useful as a starting point, but it does not settle the question. The sign’s Buddhist meaning, its Japanese reading, and its strong present-day association with Nazi imagery all matter, and orientation alone does not address any of them.

The anime adaptation
The official Tokyo Revengers anime site announced on 22 June 2025 that the Three Deities War arc was planned for broadcast in 2026. That was a planned date at the time of announcement. As of October 2026, check the official site for the current broadcast and streaming schedule rather than relying on the 2025 announcement.

- Identify the setting first: a Japanese Buddhist or cultural context, a fictional gang identity, or historical Nazi imagery.
- Note the orientation, but do not treat it as the final test.
- Check how the specific edition or streaming platform presents the mark, since treatment varies.
