Cooper Abbott is the Butcher, the concert is an FBI sting, and Cooper is captured with help from his wife, Rachel. But the final bicycle-spoke clue suggests he may escape custody: the film shows him picking his handcuffs in the transport van, not getting out of it.
What is the twist in Trap?
The first major reveal is that Cooper Abbott, played by Josh Hartnett, is the serial killer known as the Butcher. The film discloses his identity early, so its suspense is less about guessing who the killer is than watching him try to avoid detection while keeping up the appearance of an ordinary father on an outing with his daughter, Riley. Shyamalan described the appeal as putting the audience in Cooper’s point of view as the pressure builds. (TheWrap, April 18, 2024)

The next reveal is that the concert’s unusually heavy security is part of an FBI operation designed to catch the Butcher. Cooper recognizes that the event is a trap and begins looking for a way out without exposing himself to Riley. (Netflix Tudum, March 11, 2025; What to Watch, August 2, 2024)
How do Cooper’s escape attempts lead to the capture?
Riley’s backstage opportunity does not get him out
Cooper takes advantage of Riley’s chance to join Lady Raven onstage to get backstage himself. The move gives him access beyond the audience, but it does not clear the watched perimeter or provide a safe exit. When that route fails, Cooper tells Lady Raven who he is and threatens Spencer, his captive, to force her to drive them away. (What to Watch, August 2, 2024; Radio Times, August 9, 2024)

Lady Raven uses Cooper’s phone to get help
At Cooper’s house, Lady Raven gets hold of his phone and reaches Spencer through the live feed. She also turns to her audience on social media for help locating Cooper. The reversal is pointed: Cooper has used the phone to watch and control Spencer, while Lady Raven uses the same device and her audience to seek help. That contrast is a reading of the plot, rather than a stated explanation of Shyamalan’s intent. (What to Watch, August 2, 2024)
Rachel’s suspicion helps bring the sting down on him
Cooper’s wife, Rachel, has suspected him and planted evidence that helped put the authorities on his trail. He later returns to confront her. Rachel stalls him with pie containing sedatives, giving Dr. Josephine Grant and the FBI the opportunity to capture him. (What to Watch, August 2, 2024; Radio Times, August 9, 2024)
Rank #2
Does Cooper get caught in Trap?
Yes. Rachel’s sedative gives Dr. Grant and the FBI the opening to arrest Cooper. But the capture is not presented as secure. As he leaves, Cooper handles Riley’s fallen bicycle and secretly removes one of its spokes. In the transport van, he uses the spoke to pick his handcuffs. (What to Watch, August 2, 2024; Radio Times, August 9, 2024)
The final image implies that Cooper may try to escape, and his attention to the bicycle becomes a practical bit of preparation. It does not show him escaping from the van or establish what happens next. The distinction matters: he has demonstrated that he can free himself from the handcuffs, not that he has already gotten away.
What happens in the mid-credits scene?
The brief mid-credits scene follows Jamie, a venue worker who learns from a news report that he had helped the Butcher. It provides a short aftermath beat for someone caught up in Cooper’s efforts to evade the sting; it does not resolve Cooper’s fate. (Radio Times, August 9, 2024)
Is Trap based on a true story?
No. Netflix Tudum says the film is not directly based on a true story, though its premise was partly inspired by Operation Flagship. In 1985, the U.S. Marshals Service and Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department used a fake sports-ticket offer to lure fugitives; the operation resulted in 101 arrests, according to Tudum. Shyamalan recalled being struck by the real operation’s absurdity, including officers dressed as cheerleaders and mascots. The real event offers context for the sting premise, but it is not the story of Cooper or the events in the film. (Netflix Tudum, March 11, 2025)
