Roger Daltrey’s “I’m ready to go at any time” remark was a reflection on mortality and a life he felt was fulfilled—not an announcement that he was dying or a report of a terminal diagnosis. People quoted the words in a January 13, 2024 report of an interview with The Times, in which Daltrey also spoke about his family, his legacy and thoughts prompted by a serious illness years earlier.
What Roger Daltrey said about death
In the interview with The Times, as quoted by People, Daltrey said: “My dreams came true so, listen, I’m ready to go at any time. My family are all great and all taken care of.” People reported that he was 79 at the time.

He also put the thought in the context of age and mortality: “You’ve got to be realistic,” he added. “You can’t live your life forever. Like I said, people my age, we’re in the way. There are no guitar strings to be changed on this old instrument.” The remarks were presented as his personal perspective, not as a statement about an imminent medical crisis.
Why he was reflecting on mortality
People’s account says Daltrey had thought about his death and legacy, especially after he became seriously ill with viral meningitis in 2015. The illness is background to the reflection; the report does not say he was experiencing viral meningitis in 2024.

#1 Best Overall
- Who's Next, their fifth studio album released in 1971, is often ranked as one of the best albums of all time
Daltrey described feeling that his dreams had come true and that his family were well and taken care of. Those comments explain the tone of the quotation: he was talking about a sense of completion and acceptance, rather than announcing a new diagnosis.
What he said about assisted dying
People’s report also covered Daltrey’s comments on assisted dying, in the context of Esther Rantzen’s public discussion of the subject. They were personal views reported in that interview, not medical advice or evidence about Daltrey’s prognosis. The report does not establish a medical conclusion about him from those comments.

What later health reports do—and don’t—establish
A later Yahoo Entertainment report described hearing and vision difficulties for Daltrey at age 81 and repeated his 2024 comments. It does not say that he revised those remarks, and it provides no current medical prognosis. The 2024 quotation should therefore be understood as what he said at that time, not as a current health update.
The January 2024 account was published by People and republished by Yahoo Entertainment; the original Times interview was not independently available for review here. People also mentioned WHO, the album Daltrey and Pete Townshend released in 2019, as music context.
