What “adjusted for today’s dollars” means
An inflation adjustment translates a historical amount into a consumer-price comparison for a chosen later period. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) calculator uses the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted. The CPI tracks average price changes over time for a representative basket of consumer goods and services; it is not a measure of a person’s wealth or investment performance. For a clearly specified conversion, the calculation is: historical amount × (target-period CPI-U ÷ source-period CPI-U). The result depends on the selected source and target periods. A death-date estimate might use an annual average or a particular month; those choices should be stated rather than mixed. Since the six adjusted amounts above are reproduced from the publisher and its target basis is unclear, this article does not recast them as a new, verified set of present-day figures.
Why Marilyn Monroe’s figures are not interchangeable
Celebrity Net Worth reports an estimated net worth of $800,000 for Marilyn Monroe at her death, and separately says about $370,000 remained after settlement costs and fees. Its page attributes the latter account to Monroe’s will filed in Los Angeles County. These amounts describe different things: an estimate of net worth and a reported amount remaining after costs. They should not be combined or presented as competing versions of one identical estate figure. A CPI conversion answers a narrow question: what historical dollars correspond to a later amount when consumer prices are used as the yardstick? It does not reconstruct a celebrity’s portfolio, property values, debts, estate taxes, ownership stakes, later licensing revenue, or the value of film and image rights. Those factors can change the value associated with a person or their estate without being captured by a consumer-price index.
That distinction matters especially for celebrities whose work continues to generate income or whose assets passed through an estate. A present-day purchasing-power comparison can make historical sums easier to understand, but it cannot establish what a star—or their heirs—would own today. The six figures remain publisher estimates, and the Monroe figures illustrate why “net worth” and “estate proceeds” need separate labels.
