The Assistant is Kitty Green’s 2019 drama about Jane, a recent college graduate working as a junior assistant at a powerful entertainment company. Through the routine tasks of her workday, the film gradually reveals a workplace shaped by abuse and unequal power. This article is about Green’s film; other works share the title.
What is The Assistant about?
Jane hopes to become a film producer, but her immediate responsibilities are mundane: making coffee, managing office supplies, arranging lunch and travel, taking phone messages, and helping onboard a new hire. As the day unfolds, those tasks bring her into contact with signs of abuse and workplace degradation. Level Forward’s synopsis describes Jane deciding to take a stand as she confronts the scale of the system around her.
Protagonist Pictures’ sales synopsis adds that Jane is belittled by colleagues, drawn into her boss’s personal life, and asked to accompany a new hire to a hotel. Those details come from the distributor’s promotional description, rather than independent reporting.
Who directed and wrote the film?
Kitty Green directed The Assistant and co-wrote it with Ming-Zhu Hii, according to the British Film Institute listing. Green has said she was interested in the systems and structures that keep women from positions of power. She saw an assistant working for a predator as a way to examine gendered workplaces and misconduct from a low position in the hierarchy. Green discussed that approach in a BFI interview updated 15 December 2020.
