Zeng Jinlian of China is the tallest woman ever recorded, according to Guinness World Records: 246.3 cm (8 ft 1 in) at her death in 1982. But the surviving, authoritative evidence does not establish a reliable, consistently measured top ten. This is a guide to ten historically documented women associated with exceptional-height records or claims—not a definitive ranking. Where a figure is an estimate or belongs to a narrower record category, that distinction matters.

Who is the tallest woman ever recorded?

Guinness World Records names Zeng Jinlian the tallest woman ever recorded, reporting a height of 246.3 cm (8 ft 1 in) when she died on 13 February 1982. Its account says her height was verified above eight feet; the supported record figure is 246.3 cm, not higher variants sometimes repeated elsewhere. Guinness says the record remained unbroken in its 2025 retrospective. Guinness’s current record page and its 2025 retrospective provide the record context.

A strict list of the ten tallest women in history cannot be responsibly ranked from the available authoritative records. Historical measurements vary in method and quality, some figures are retrospective estimates, and a teenager or “tallest living woman” record is not automatically comparable to a lifetime adult ranking. The ten entries below therefore identify notable, traceable cases and explain what each source does—and does not—establish.

Ten historically documented women and height records

  1. Zeng Jinlian — 246.3 cm (8 ft 1 in)

Country: China. Record context: tallest woman ever recorded, according to Guinness World Records. The height was reported at her death on 13 February 1982. Guinness describes abnormal growth beginning at four months, reports she was 156 cm before age four and 217 cm at 13, and notes scoliosis and diabetes. Those details come from Guinness’s historical account, not a modern remeasurement.

  2. Anna Haining Swan — 241.3 cm (7 ft 11 in)

Country: Canada. Record context: tallest female teenager recorded by Guinness World Records. Guinness says Swan continued growing until age 17, when she reached 241.3 cm. This is a documented teenage record, not proof that she ranked second among all women measured at adulthood. Guinness also records her marriage to Martin van Buren Bates in its tallest-married-couple category. Guinness’s history of Swan gives this category and measurement.

  3. Jane Bunford — 2.39 m peak standing height

Country: United Kingdom. Record context: Guinness reports that Bunford stood 2.39 m at her peak in 1916. The often-quoted 2.41 m (7 ft 11 in) is not the same kind of measurement: Guinness describes it as an estimate adjusted for spinal curvature, based on a 2.31 m measurement shortly before her death. Treating the adjusted estimate as a direct standing measurement would overstate the certainty of the comparison. Guinness’s account of Bunford explains the distinction.

  4. Sandy Allen — 231.7 cm (7 ft 7.2 in)

Country: United States. Record context: Guinness’s 2025 retrospective reports 231.7 cm. Its history timeline says Allen became the first woman Guinness officially recognized as the tallest woman living in 1975. That living-person recognition is historically important, but it is not itself a universal lifetime ranking. Allen was also a writer, actress and advocate. Guinness’s current record page and its record-history timeline provide further context.

  5. Ella Ewing — a frequently repeated historical claim

Country: United States. Ewing is often named among exceptionally tall women in historical accounts, but the commonly repeated height claims are not validated by a suitable primary record source in the material available here. Her precise height and place in a ranking should therefore be treated as unverified, not as a confirmed position below the documented figures above.

  6. Trijntje Keever — a disputed historical claim

Country: Netherlands. Keever is another woman frequently described as an exceptionally tall historical figure. The commonly repeated measurements were not confirmed by a suitable primary record source here, so they cannot establish a reliable height or rank against modern documented cases.

  7. Additional contenders: no verified measurement established

For the remaining places in a purported top ten, the available authoritative sources do not establish a comparable set of named women, measurements, dates and methods. Filling those slots with popularly circulated names or precise heights would imply a level of verification the records do not support.

  8. Why this list does not assign ranks four through ten

A numbered top ten would falsely suggest that all ten heights were measured and verified on a common basis. The documented examples above instead show distinct kinds of evidence: a lifetime record, a teenager category, an adjusted estimate and a historical living-person recognition. For other historical candidates, the necessary source-backed measurements are not established here.

  9. What a complete historical ranking would require

To compare candidates fairly, a record would need a reliable height in centimetres, the date and age at measurement, whether the value came from a direct standing measurement or later adjustment, and the record category and authority. Without those details, a precise ordinal table would confuse evidence with repetition.

  10. How to read “tallest women in history” lists

Check whether a list distinguishes a verified measurement from a reported estimate, and whether it separates adult lifetime records from teenager or living-person categories. A source’s authority for one record does not make every historical claim it repeats equally certain; the measurement method and provenance still matter.

Why historical height rankings are difficult

  • Different measurement bases: Jane Bunford’s direct peak standing height of 2.39 m differs from the 2.41 m figure adjusted for spinal curvature.
  • Different record categories: Swan’s 241.3 cm at age 17 is a tallest-female-teenager record; Allen’s recognition in 1975 concerned the tallest woman living at that time.
  • Uneven documentation: a repeated historical height is not equivalent to a source-backed measurement with a stated date and method.
  • Precision can mislead: centimetre-level figures should not be merged into a universal ranking unless the measurements are comparable and their provenance is clear.
