The finding was made after his death; it does not establish that LBD alone caused his death. LBD is a progressive brain disorder that can affect thinking, movement, mood, behavior and sleep. There is no cure, but individualized care can help manage symptoms and support quality of life.
What is Lewy body dementia?
Lewy body dementia is an umbrella term for progressive brain disorders associated with abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein. These deposits, known as Lewy bodies, affect brain systems involved in thinking, movement, behavior and mood. The National Institute on Aging describes two clinical patterns: dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia. Clinicians distinguish them partly by the order in which cognitive and movement symptoms develop.
LBD can change attention and alertness, cause visual hallucinations, affect movement, disrupt sleep and alter mood or behavior. Attention and alertness may fluctuate, and symptoms vary from person to person. Memory loss is not necessarily the first or only sign. NIH MedlinePlus Magazine reported that more than 1 million people in the United States had LBD in its December 4, 2019 article; that is a historical figure, not a current estimate.
What does the diagnosis mean in Robin Williams’ case?
NIH MedlinePlus Magazine reported that Williams had LBD when he died. The National Institute on Aging says LBD can be confirmed with certainty only by examining the brain after death. Together, those facts support describing his condition as a postmortem finding. They do not show that LBD by itself caused his death or explain his suicide, which should not be reduced to a single cause.

How does LBD differ from Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease?
LBD can be difficult to distinguish from Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and psychiatric illness because symptoms overlap. The pattern and timing of symptoms can offer clues, but no individual symptom establishes a diagnosis.

How is Lewy body dementia diagnosed?
Clinicians build a diagnosis from the history and pattern of symptoms, input from the person and caregivers, and examination. No single test confirms LBD during life. Mayo Clinic’s June 21, 2025 guidance describes assessments that may support the evaluation or help rule out other causes; which ones are appropriate depends on the individual.

- Neurological and physical examination, along with cognitive testing.
- Blood tests and MRI or CT imaging to look for other possible causes of symptoms.
- Selected PET or SPECT imaging, or a sleep study when REM sleep behavior disorder is suspected.
- Autonomic testing when symptoms affecting involuntary body functions warrant it.
- Alpha-synuclein tests in spinal fluid or skin, which Mayo Clinic describes as emerging biomarkers that are available but not yet widely used.
These are clinician-directed options, not a checklist that guarantees a diagnosis. Brain examination after death can confirm the underlying pathology.
Can Lewy body dementia be treated?
There is no cure for LBD, but medicines and therapies can help manage symptoms. As NIH MedlinePlus Magazine put it in 2019, “There is no cure for LBD, but medicine, therapy, or both can help with the symptoms.” A care plan is tailored to the person because a treatment that helps one symptom may worsen another.

Care may combine medication and practical support
Depending on the person’s needs, care may include medicines for cognitive or movement symptoms, physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy. Practical adaptations to the environment, structured routines, and education and support for caregivers can also be part of care.
Discuss medication risks with the treating clinician
Mayo Clinic warns that antipsychotic medicines may cause severe confusion, movement symptoms, sedation and, sometimes, death in people with LBD. Do not start, stop or change a medicine based on this article. If a new medicine worsens symptoms, contact the treating clinician to discuss what to do.

When should someone seek an evaluation?
New or changing difficulties with thinking, attention, movement, sleep or behavior deserve discussion with a healthcare professional, particularly when they interfere with daily life. Because LBD can resemble other conditions and symptoms may fluctuate, sharing a clear account of changes over time—and, when possible, observations from someone who knows the person well—can help a clinician assess the pattern.
