Robert Pattinson’s story about smelling like a crayon began as an account of what other people told him. In 2026, he said he used to smell that way but no longer notices his scent much. The interviews do not establish that he objectively smelled bad or had poor hygiene.
What Pattinson said in 2020
In February 2020, Teen Vogue reported on Pattinson’s interview with Allure, quoting him as saying, “Lots of people tell me I smell like a crayon.” That wording matters: he was recounting other people’s comments, not presenting an independent assessment of his scent.
Teen Vogue also reported that Pattinson rarely wore fragrance and found it overbearing. He described a Dior fragrance as less noticeable to him, but that does not show that perfume caused or changed his natural scent.
How his account changed in 2026
In a GQ interview published January 23, 2026, Pattinson was asked whether the earlier crayon comparison still applied. He replied, “I think that something has changed. My body chemistry has changed. It’s very strange. But I 100% used to smell exactly like a crayon.” He added that he did not really notice his smell anymore and that he used to have a “very particular, pronounced smell.”

Those are his personal impressions. GQ does not establish that a biological process caused the perceived change. Pattinson also joked about a “seven-year cycle” and described a previous scent as “vicious”; neither remark is scientific evidence. He said he had lost his sense of smell for a time and thought it had returned: “I have it back now…I think.”
What happened on The Tonight Show
In an April 1, 2026 appearance, covered the following day by TheWrap, Zendaya brought up Pattinson’s claim that he smelled like crayons. He affirmed it. Jimmy Fallon invited him closer and then said, “No… No. You smell very nice.” It was a playful exchange, not a rigorous scent assessment.

Does this mean Pattinson used to smell bad?
No. “Used to smell bad” is a headline interpretation, not a fact established by these accounts. The evidence is an anecdote about a crayon comparison, Pattinson’s retrospective impression that his scent changed, and Fallon’s lighthearted reaction in one television exchange. None verifies poor hygiene or an objectively unpleasant odor.
Stories about celebrity hygiene have circulated, but rumor is not confirmation. The crayon remarks should not be treated as proof of those separate claims.
