Why is Robert Redford associated with Butch Cassidy?
Redford’s breakthrough came in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), in which he played the Sundance Kid opposite Paul Newman’s Butch Cassidy. The film made Redford a major screen star and gave the Sundance name its connection to his public life and later work.
Redford later recalled that Newman supported his casting: “Had it not been for Paul, I would not have gotten that break,” he said in an Associated Press account drawing on a 2015 interview. (Associated Press)

What did Redford achieve as a director?
Redford’s work extended well beyond acting. His directorial debut, Ordinary People (1980), won the Academy Award for Best Director. SAG-AFTRA also noted that he joined the union in 1959 and received its Life Achievement Award in 1995. (SAG-AFTRA)
Was Robert Redford the founder of Sundance?
Yes. Redford established the Sundance Institute to support filmmakers and stories that had limited opportunities within the major-studio system. Its first Directors Lab began in 1981. In 1985, the Institute took over the U.S. Film Festival in Park City, which later became the Sundance Film Festival. (Sundance Institute)
Redford described the idea behind the Institute as a community for different kinds of creative work: “I wanted to have a sense of place, I wanted to create a sense of home, I wanted to create a sense of community,” he said. “I wanted to be able to do projects that were different from the run of the mill. That’s how this thing started.” The Institute’s purpose was not simply to stage a festival, but to give filmmakers space to develop their work.

Redford’s legacy also included environmental conservation. Sundance Institute says he designated 5,000 acres at Sundance as a wilderness preserve. Separately, Sundance Mountain Resort reported in its 2025 remembrance that more than 70% of the resort’s acreage was protected through conservation easements; that figure applies to the resort, not the wider Sundance region.
