Robert John, the singer-songwriter whose 1979 hit “Sad Eyes” reached No. 1, died on February 24, 2025, at age 79. His son Michael Pedrick confirmed the news to Rolling Stone, according to The Independent. No cause of death was announced in that report.

Robert John was the stage name of Robert John Pedrick Jr., an American singer whose recording career began when he was a child. Early in his career, he recorded as Bobby Pedrick Jr.; later, he performed and released music as Robert John. His story spans an early chart appearance in the late 1950s, a return to the charts in the 1960s, and his best-known success with “Sad Eyes” in 1979.

“Sad Eyes”
John’s defining success came in 1979 with “Sad Eyes,” which reached No. 1, according to AllMusic. Unlike “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” “Sad Eyes” was a song John wrote and performed himself. The Independent reported that John called it his favorite song to perform because he had written it.
In a 1979 interview on American Bandstand, John said: “I’ve always collaborated with writers in the past and it’s the first time I’ve ever written a song and recorded a song by myself and I’m very proud of it,” as quoted by The Independent.
