Who was Rob Reiner?
Robert Norman Reiner was born in the Bronx on March 6, 1947, and died at age 78 on December 14, 2025, according to The Washington Post’s obituary. He was the son of comedian, actor and filmmaker Carl Reiner and actress and singer Estelle Reiner.
Reiner first became widely known as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on Norman Lear’s television sitcom All in the Family. The Washington Post reported that he won two Emmy Awards for the role. He later became a prominent film director, moving among comedy, drama, fantasy, romance and courtroom stories.

Rob’s parents were Carl and Estelle Reiner. He married actor and director Penny Marshall in 1971; they divorced in 1979. Tracy is Marshall’s daughter, whom Rob adopted. She is not one of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner’s three children.

Rob married photographer Michele Singer in 1989. Their children are Jake, Nick and Romy. Michele was also known as Michele Singer Reiner. This blended family distinction matters: Tracy was Rob’s adopted daughter from his marriage to Marshall, while Jake, Nick and Romy were Rob and Michele’s children.

What happened to Rob and Michele Reiner?
Rob and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on December 14, 2025, according to ABC News. The Guardian reported on December 18 that Los Angeles County Medical Examiner findings classified both deaths as homicides caused by multiple sharp-force injuries.

What is the status of Nick Reiner’s case?
Nick Reiner was arrested and charged in connection with his parents’ deaths. The Associated Press reported on August 12, 2026, that a Los Angeles County grand jury had indicted him on murder charges, including an allegation of lying in wait, and that he pleaded not guilty. The indictment states accusations; a not-guilty plea is not a conviction. The cited AP report does not establish a later case outcome.
As of that August 12 report, prosecutors had not decided whether to seek the death penalty. That is a time-specific update, not a statement about any later prosecutorial decision.

The reported trust dispute
A separate Associated Press report in June 2026 said Nick sought access to money in a trust his parents had established for him to pay for his defense. The report described a trust dispute, not an outcome in the criminal case, and quoted his civil attorneys as saying he is presumed innocent.
What have Reiner’s children said publicly?
In December 2025, Rob and Michele’s children said they would share plans for a memorial service at a later date and thanked people for their condolences. That statement does not establish whether or how a memorial was subsequently held.
Jake Reiner wrote in April 2026 about losing his parents. ABC News reported in August 2026 on an interview in which Jake spoke about the deaths and his brother’s arrest, and said he was working with Children’s Institute. The Los Angeles Times reported on September 1, 2026, that Jake had married Maria Gilfillan. These are dated public reports; they do not establish details about the family’s private circumstances beyond what was reported.
