The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set thousands of years before the events of the familiar Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Its Second Age world is built for scale: ancient realms, vast landscapes and battles. But the spectacle matters most when it brings a character’s ambition, fear or vulnerability into focus. The series’ production accounts and cast interviews offer a revealing way to see how that balance is made.
What is The Rings of Power really about?
The series follows characters in Middle-earth’s Second Age, long before the film timelines. Galadriel is therefore not the figure audiences know from those later events, but an earlier version of a character with a much longer life and history. As TIME’s 2022 account of the adaptation notes, the showrunners drew on the appendices to The Return of the King while working amid differing versions across Tolkien’s writings and limits on the material available to adapt.
That context makes the series less a retelling of a familiar story than an interpretation of an earlier age. Its grand settings establish the scale of Middle-earth; the more intimate drama comes from what its people want and what those desires may cost. Celebrimbor’s pride and ambition, Sauron’s professed wish to heal the world, and Galadriel’s long arc are not incidental pauses in the spectacle. They are ways the show gives its history personal stakes.
How does the spectacle serve the characters?
The scale is not merely a matter of what appears on screen. ILM production visual-effects supervisor Jason Smith describes working with the showrunners to put the story visually on screen, including the challenge of creating Númenor and a living Khazad-dûm. He characterizes effects and previs as part of shaping the story, calling visual effects “the pulp that’s tying the paper together.” The image-making is most persuasive when the world feels consequential to the people moving through it.

Season 2’s production designer, Kristian Milsted, reported 110 new sets and enhancements to 19 sets from Season 1 in a 2024 Art Directors Guild submission. That is the designer’s production figure, not an independent audit, but it gives a concrete sense of the work behind the series’ changing environments. The same submission describes an aim of capturing more footage in camera so visual effects could enhance and expand the sets.
How much is practical effects versus CGI?
There is no single practical-versus-digital formula for the series in the production accounts cited here. The method varies by scene: physical sets, performers, makeup, location photography, lighting and digital work can contribute to one finished image. A Barrow-wight sequence in Season 2 illustrates that combination.
Barrow-wights: performance, prosthetics and digital enhancement
Showrunner Patrick McKay said the sequence combined contortionists and prosthetic makeup by Barrie and Sarah Gower with costumes designed by Luca Mosca, followed by substantial digital enhancement. He described it as “a huge marriage between old school practical and the latest visual effects.” The physical performance and makeup supplied tangible movement and texture; digital work then extended what the camera captured.
Mount Doom: controlled studio work and location photography
For Season 1’s Mount Doom aftermath, ARRI’s 2023 production account describes large-format ALEXA cameras and lenses, a narrow red palette, studio lighting behind muslin screens, and practical fire and smoke supplemented by visual effects. The sequence also moves from studio scenes to location work. Cinematographer Alex Disenhof said the large-format setup made shallow depth of field possible while leaving the world hazy behind the characters. That choice keeps attention on the people without erasing the devastated landscape around them.

Actors have described using Tolkien’s writing as a source for their own interpretations, not as a claim that the series reproduces a single uncontested version of each character. In an Amazon interview about Season 2, Charles Edwards said a description of Celebrimbor in Unfinished Tales helped him understand the character’s pride and ambition. Charlie Vickers said Tolkien’s letters influenced his reading of Sauron, particularly the idea that Sauron wanted to heal and rehabilitate Middle-earth.
Those comments make the inner conflict behind the spectacle easier to see. Ambition can be both a source of creative achievement and a danger; a stated desire to heal can sit uneasily beside the drive to control. The tension is the actors’ interpretive starting point, not proof that Tolkien supplied a simple answer to how the series should portray either character.

The craft is most interesting when physical and digital choices work together rather than compete for attention. Sets establish a world performers can inhabit; location work and cinematography give it changing texture; effects can expand, alter or complete what was filmed. The production accounts show that these decisions are part of how the story takes shape, not just a final layer added after filming.
