What happened before he was found?
According to the medical examiner’s August 22, 2024, release, a fall was reported on July 11. Simmons spent the following day in bed and was found unresponsive on his bedroom floor on the morning of July 13. His death was determined at 9:45 a.m.
An examination took place at the department’s Forensic Science Center on July 14. The department certified and announced the cause and manner on August 22.

In July, while the investigation was pending, the cause had not yet been determined. The Los Angeles Times reported on July 16, 2024, that the cause was deferred. That was a preliminary status; the medical examiner later issued the final determination in August.
