What kind of fighting game is Sparking! ZERO?
DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO continues the Budokai Tenkaichi/Sparking! approach: combat unfolds in 3D arenas rather than along the lanes of a traditional 2D fighter. Bandai Namco describes fast movement, rush attacks, ultimate attacks, beam clashes, transformations, and arenas that react to attacks and transformations. Those features define the game’s intended spectacle; they do not, by themselves, establish how balanced or responsive the combat feels in play.

That distinction matters to the review verdict. The game’s appeal is its scale and fantasy: a broad cast of Dragon Ball characters meeting in dramatic, high-energy battles. If your main criterion is a finely tuned competitive fighter, the publisher’s feature descriptions alone are not enough to make that case.
How many characters are in Sparking! ZERO?
Bandai Namco’s 2025 corporate announcement gives the game a series-high roster of 182 playable characters. The publisher’s launch announcement had reported 181 playable characters at launch, so the 182 figure is the later official count, not the launch-day number. The breadth is a clear selling point for fans who want to choose from across the series.

What modes are included?
Episode Battle
Episode Battle is the single-player story mode. Players choose from eight featured characters and revisit selected battles from their perspectives. Some choices or battle conditions can lead to branching “what if” outcomes, giving the mode an alternate-history angle alongside its retelling of familiar events.
Custom Battle
Custom Battle lets players assemble scenarios by choosing fighters, dialogue, and effects, then play and share those creations online. It is the mode that most directly extends the game beyond its preset matchups: its value depends on whether you enjoy constructing and exploring fan-made battles.

Versus and tournaments
The publisher describes online and split-screen versus play, as well as World Tournament scenarios. Its overview specifies that local multiplayer is available on the Hyperbolic Time Chamber stage; do not assume that every stage is available for local play. Check the current listing for your platform for details.
Is the story difficulty fair?
A Bandai Namco producer said tough story opponents were made deliberately difficult to preserve the role-playing experience and make victories more satisfying. That explains the studio’s intent, but it is not evidence that every difficult encounter feels fair or that the game is balanced for competitive play. Players who prefer a gentle story progression should be prepared for some opponents to push back.

Which platforms and editions should you compare?
Current official publisher pages list PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Platform availability and release timing can vary by region, so confirm the listing for the system and country where you plan to play.
Edition contents also differ by region and can change as DLC is added. The US publisher overview lists Standard with the base game, Deluxe with the base game and Season Pass/DLC 1–3, and Ultimate with the base game, upgrade pack, bonuses, and Season Pass. The European page presents additional Super Limit-Breaking NEO content and physical or digital options. Compare what is included on your regional store page rather than relying on an edition name alone.

The official US listing marks the Premium Collector’s Edition sold out and describes physical extras including a lenticular card, diorama, exclusive cards, SteelBook, and metallic bookmark, alongside the game and upgrade voucher. Bandai Namco reported more than five million units sold worldwide in 2025 and said the game was then the fastest-selling title in the Dragon Ball console game series. The same corporate announcement retrospectively reported more than three million units sold in the first 24 hours. These are publisher-reported commercial milestones, not review scores or measures of player satisfaction.

Verdict: Is Sparking! ZERO worth it?
DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO is a solid arena-fighting-game pick if you want the scale, character variety, and dramatic battles associated with Dragon Ball, plus modes that let you revisit story fights or make your own. Its strongest documented case is breadth and spectacle. If your priority is a tightly balanced competitive fighter, the available feature and sales information does not establish that it will meet that need; judge it by that distinction and check the current platform and edition details before buying.
