“Mid-season replacement” can mean a program that debuts partway through a broadcast season, or a cast change made while a series is already running. This list uses the second meaning: either a new actor taking over an existing character or a new character stepping into a departing regular’s place. The examples are ordered editorially, not by an objective industry ranking. The criteria are the importance of the role, how clearly the successor established an identity, the fit with the show, documented audience or critical response, and the series’ subsequent continuity. The available evidence supports ten examples, not a defensible all-time top 15.
New characters who succeeded departing cast members
These performers did not take over the same character. Each brought a new character into an ensemble after a regular left.
1. Woody Harrelson as Woody Boyd on Cheers
When Nicholas Colasanto died, Cheers introduced Woody Boyd, played by Woody Harrelson, as a new member of the bar’s ensemble. TVLine has described this as a seamless successor transition. That is an editorial assessment, but it captures why the change stands out: the show continued with a distinct character rather than attempting to reproduce Coach.
2. Mike Farrell as B.J. Hunnicutt on M*A*S*H
Mike Farrell joined the series as B.J. Hunnicutt after Wayne Rogers left the role of Trapper John McIntyre. The Television Academy identifies B.J. as a new character who replaced Rogers’s place in the ensemble, not as a recast of Trapper. That distinction let the series move forward without pretending the two characters were interchangeable.

3. David Ogden Stiers as Charles Winchester on M*A*S*H
After Larry Linville’s Frank Burns left, David Ogden Stiers arrived as Charles Winchester, another new character rather than a recast. Winchester took over the departing regular’s place in the ensemble while remaining his own character. Together, the B.J. and Winchester transitions show that M*A*S*H handled two separate departures by expanding the cast in different directions.
4. Tiffani-Amber Thiessen as Valerie Malone on Beverly Hills, 90210
Thiessen joined Beverly Hills, 90210 in season five as Valerie Malone after Shannen Doherty’s departure. Valerie was a new character, not a replacement portrayal of Doherty’s character. TVLine praises the role’s longevity through season nine; that judgment supports its inclusion as a substantial successor, though it is not a measured comparison with every cast change in television history.

5. Heather Locklear as Stacy Sheridan on T.J. Hooker
Locklear joined in season two as Stacy Sheridan, replacing April Clough’s Vicki Taylor as the main cast’s woman officer. This is a cast change within a series’ run. The distinction matters because T.J. Hooker itself also premiered as an ABC mid-season replacement in 1982—the other meaning of the phrase in the title.
6. Priscilla Barnes as Terri Alden on Three’s Company
After Suzanne Somers departed, Three’s Company first introduced Jenilee Harrison as Cindy Snow, a temporary roommate character. Priscilla Barnes then joined as Terri Alden, a permanent cast addition. The Television Academy’s account says the show remained popular after Somers left, while viewership declined; it does not establish that the cast change caused either outcome.

7. Sharon Gless as Christine Cagney on Cagney & Lacey
Sharon Gless took over the role of Christine Cagney after Meg Foster appeared in the part for a handful of episodes. This is a same-character recast, but the reasons for the change are not settled in the cited coverage: TVLine recounts differing explanations, including a statement attributed to a CBS representative and a later report with a different rationale. The transition is notable, but those conflicting accounts do not support presenting one motive as fact.

In a recast, the character remains while the performer changes. These cases show how visible—and sometimes complicated—that handoff can be.

8. Daphne Maxwell Reid as Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Janet Hubert played Viv for the first three seasons; Daphne Maxwell Reid played her for the final three, according to ABC’s chronology. ABC also notes that the character’s presentation changed with the recast. Accounts of why Hubert left conflict, so the transition can be described without assigning a definitive cause.
9. Sarah Chalke and Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner on Roseanne
Lecy Goranson left after season five, and Sarah Chalke played Becky in seasons six and seven. Goranson returned in season eight, while Chalke appeared as a guest. This was not a simple permanent handoff: two actors portrayed the same character at different points, and the later overlap gave the show material for self-aware jokes. ABC provides this chronology.

10. Jessica Bowman as Colleen Cooper on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman
Jessica Bowman took over Colleen Cooper midway through season three after Erika Flores’s departure. TVLine reports audience objections and competing accounts of why Flores left. That makes the recast an example of a handoff that drew resistance, not proof that the change was a failure.
What separates a successful replacement from a simple handoff?
The examples point to two different creative problems. A new successor character has to earn a place in an established ensemble without being a copy of the person who left. A recast has to preserve a familiar character while allowing the new performer to make the role their own. Neither type is automatically successful: a cast change can be accepted, resisted, or accompanied by shifts in how a character is written.
These ten cases are a curated selection, not a definitive ranking. The historical sources provide uneven evidence: some document the chronology, while others offer editorial judgments or report audience response. They do not supply a common measure for comparing every replacement across television history.
