Scott Newman died before his father
Scott died on November 28, 1978, aged 28, from an overdose of alcohol and pills, according to an obituary reproduced in the September 30, 2008 Congressional Record. Paul Newman died in 2008, so Scott did not withdraw from public life after his father’s death.
Newman later established the Scott Newman Center, which focused on drug-prevention education. A 2015 Vanity Fair profile describes the center’s origins. In a 2022 Guardian interview, Newman’s reflections on his son were described as a source of lasting pain and responsibility. Scott’s story is more than the circumstances of his death, but those circumstances shaped part of his father’s later charitable work.

What became of Newman’s daughters?
The clearest detailed account of the daughters’ differing public roles comes from Vanity Fair’s 2015 profile. Those descriptions are a snapshot from that year, not a reliable update on everyone’s present-day activities.
Susan Kendall Newman
Susan worked as an actor, producer, and social activist. The 2015 Vanity Fair account also describes her speaking publicly about concerns over Newman’s Own leadership and the family’s role in the charitable legacy. In 2025, EL PAÍS reported that Susan Kendall Newman had died at 72, citing a family announcement.
Stephanie Newman
Vanity Fair characterized Stephanie’s life as quiet and apart from the family business. That account supports saying she kept a lower public profile; it does not establish that she disappeared or explain her private life in detail.
Nell Newman
Nell founded Newman’s Own Organics. Vanity Fair reported that the business had given away more than $50 million by 2014. That is a historical figure reported in 2015, not a current cumulative total.

Melissa Newman
Vanity Fair reported that Melissa had volunteered at a Connecticut women’s prison. The profile does not establish whether that work continued after its publication.
Claire Newman Soderlund
Claire was involved in philanthropy, according to the 2015 Vanity Fair profile. In 2022, she spoke to The Guardian about recovered interview transcripts of her father, his wish that his children might publish a biography, and her memories of him. She also described Joanne Woodward’s response to Newman’s death: “Losing Dad just floored her. The world stopped for her then.”

How the children figured in Newman’s charitable legacy
Newman’s public image is closely tied to philanthropy, but the children’s involvement was not a simple or uniform story. Vanity Fair reported that Newman intended his children to have a voice in charitable giving. In a 2007 recorded interview excerpt quoted by the magazine, he said: “All my children get a certain amount to be able to give away every year and they will be giving away my estate as well…. Yes, they are involved. They sit on the board of the companies and the foundation.” The magazine also reported that he began giving each of his five daughters $25,000 a year to donate to charities of their choosing.
The same 2015 profile described disagreement between Susan and Newman’s Own Foundation leadership over the family’s influence. It also said some sisters stayed silent because they did not want to worsen the dispute or were bound by confidentiality agreements. The reporting therefore records both Newman’s stated intention for family participation and later tensions about how the legacy was managed.

That is a company-attributed historical total as of the report, not a current figure. The record also described the Hole in the Wall Gang camps, which offered free recreation to children with cancer and other serious illnesses. Vanity Fair reported that the first camp served 288 children when it opened in 1988, and that the camps had reached 384,700 children by 2012.

The phrase compresses very different lives into one dramatic claim. Scott died in 1978, long before Newman. The daughters’ documented paths included public work, activism, philanthropy, a business associated with the family’s charitable enterprise, and a deliberately quieter profile. Later reporting also shows that at least some family members continued to speak publicly about Newman and his legacy.
Press coverage cannot tell us how close the siblings were, measure anyone’s success, or supply a complete present-day account of the surviving daughters. The most useful answer to “Where are Paul Newman’s daughters now?” is therefore a qualified one: public accounts show distinct roles at different points in time, not a single family-wide retreat after 2008.
A documentary perspective
The Last Movie Stars examines Newman and Woodward and includes Stephanie’s perspective, making it a relevant screen account of the family as well as the couple. Streaming availability varies by region and was not established here.
