Pamela Anderson has said the stolen private recording was deeply hurtful and changed how the public saw her. Reporting also describes the scandal as a source of strain in her marriage to Tommy Lee. But the available accounts do not establish that the tape alone caused their 1998 divorce: the separation came amid Lee’s arrest following a domestic-abuse incident.
What Pamela Anderson said about the recording
Anderson and Lee married in 1995 after a brief courtship. Anderson later described their early relationship as an intense love affair. She has pushed back on the familiar “sex tape” label, describing the material instead as private footage of “two crazy naked people in love.” In a 2023 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, she called it “stolen property” and said it was never meant for anyone else to see. She also said she had never watched the recording and found its exposure “very hurtful.”
In her account, the recording came from private moments filmed while the newly married couple were at home. ABC News Australia’s report says a safe was stolen from their home while the property was under construction; Anderson said she did not know when it was taken. The report also says Lee told her that footage had been spliced together to make it appear they had been having sex on camera throughout. These details are reported as part of Anderson’s account, rather than as independently established findings.
How the scandal put pressure on the marriage
The recording’s exposure brought private material into public view and added intense pressure to an already highly scrutinized relationship. TIME’s account describes the scandal as straining the marriage. In 2015, Anderson characterized their beginning as “too much for both of us.” That supports describing the scandal as a burden on the relationship; it does not establish that it was the sole or decisive reason they split.

Anderson said she and Lee refused an offer for the recording and did not make money from it. Those are claims conveyed through her account, not independently verified financial findings here. She also recalled believing that the scandal had changed how she was seen publicly and ended her chances of being taken seriously as an actor. That is her retrospective assessment of its impact, not a measurement of her whole career.
Why the 1998 separation needs broader context
TIME reports that Anderson and Lee divorced in 1998 after his arrest for domestic abuse. ABC describes an incident in which Lee grabbed Anderson while she was holding their infant son Dylan; Anderson wrote that she was injured and decided the relationship could not continue. The accounts place the separation amid the reported abuse incident and arrest, as well as the public strain surrounding the recording. It would overstate the evidence to say the tape scandal itself caused the divorce.

Where to hear Anderson’s account in her own words
Anderson’s memoir, Love, Pamela, and the documentary Pamela, a love story offer her retrospective perspective. Netflix describes the documentary as Anderson sharing her story through personal video and diaries, so it is a first-person account rather than independent corroboration of every event. Anderson told Netflix Tudum that she wanted to “take control of the narrative for the first time,” a process she described as intimidating but necessary. The official Netflix title page identifies the documentary.
