How does the case relate to Petty’s earlier conviction?
Contemporary coverage said Petty had a 1995 New York conviction for first-degree attempted rape, from when he was 16, and described the associated sex-offender registration obligation. The California federal case concerned the later failure-to-register charge, not a new prosecution for that New York offense. What sentence did Petty receive?
In July 2022, U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald sentenced Petty to three years of probation, one year of home confinement and a $55,000 fine. The Los Angeles Times attributed those terms to Justice Department spokesperson Ciaran McEvoy. The sentence did not include prison time in this case.
