“Sic Semper Systema” is less a conventional superhero episode than a study in what happens when restraint starts to fail. Matt Murdock is drawn back toward vigilantism by guilt and injustice, while Wilson Fisk’s cultivated public self sits uneasily beside the violence and ambition beneath it. The episode’s best scenes make those parallel struggles feel connected; its weaker stretches let the supporting political and criminal machinery crowd out the characters at their center.

What is the official title of Episode 4?
The official title is “Sic Semper Systema,” as listed by Disney+ and Rotten Tomatoes. “The Devil Wants Out” is the review subtitle, not the episode’s title. Disney+ frames the hour around Matt and Fisk’s darker halves struggling to break free.
GamesRadar+ reads the title as a variation on “Sic semper tyrannis,” interpreting “Systema” as a pointed reference to the system Matt serves and fights. That is the outlet’s interpretation, rather than an official translation or a confirmed explanation from the creators. It fits the episode’s concern with institutions that fail to protect people—and with the compromises made by those working inside them.

How does the episode bring Matt and Fisk into parallel?
Matt’s conflict is not simply whether to put the suit back on. He has to reckon with the guilt that keeps pulling him toward the role, even as the law and his life outside it offer reasons to hold back. The episode makes that tension persuasive when it treats vigilantism as a temptation with consequences, not an uncomplicated answer to injustice.
Fisk’s pressure works differently. His public identity depends on control and respectability, but the violence tied to his criminal past remains active around him. Former associates begin fighting over his territories, making the gap between the public figure and the power broker harder to contain. The parallel is not that Matt and Fisk are morally equivalent; it is that both are struggling to govern the parts of themselves and their lives that refuse to stay hidden.
Why is Hector Ayala’s trial a key storyline?
The courtroom story gives the episode’s institutional theme a concrete human cost. Cherry persuades journalist BB Urich’s colleague, Daniel Blake, to persuade Hector Ayala’s friend and witness, Hector’s neighbor, to appear at the trial—more precisely, Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis identifies Cherry persuading Torres to testify. Police intimidation then pushes Torres into perjury: he says he was never assaulted. The testimony turns a legal proceeding into a measure of how effectively authority can frighten people into denying what happened.
That pressure gives Matt a reason to care about the case beyond abstract faith in the law. The episode’s tension comes from watching legal procedure continue while the conditions for truthful testimony are being undermined. It is a strong fit for a story about the limits of both official justice and personal intervention, even if the surrounding political plot can make the hour feel crowded.

What does Matt’s reunion with Frank Castle add?
Matt’s meeting with Frank Castle is one of the episode’s strongest character scenes. As The Ringer recounts, Frank is holed up in a basement surrounded by guns and an evidence board. Matt brings him a bullet casing; both recognize that it does not belong to Castle.
The exchange matters because it gives the reunion a purpose beyond the pleasure of seeing two familiar characters share a scene. The casing becomes a lead, while their different approaches to violence hang over the conversation. Matt’s search for a path between passivity and brutality is sharpened by Frank’s presence: Frank is not a reassuring guide back to action, but a reminder of where that impulse can lead.
Does Episode 4 deliver action, humor, and suspense?
Not in the usual superhero rhythm. The episode leans on legal pressure, political maneuvering, and psychological tension rather than building toward a run of conventional action scenes. Caroline Siede of Episodic Medium, in a quote reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes, called it “the most exciting episode of the season yet,” while noting that it lacks conventional action. That description captures the hour’s ambition: suspense comes from compromised testimony, a brewing gang war, and the question of what Matt and Fisk will let loose.
The dark humor helps the episode move between those pressures without making every scene relentlessly grim. But the tonal range is a balancing act. When the story shifts among Matt, Fisk, the trial, and Fisk’s orbit, the central parallel can lose focus. Allyson Johnson of But Why Tho?, in an excerpt displayed on Rotten Tomatoes, argues that time spent with Fisk and his companions throws the story off balance, even while Matt’s guilt remains engaging. That is a fair criticism: the hour’s breadth adds texture, but not every detour deepens its central conflict.

What do the episode’s smaller references contribute?
GamesRadar+’s episode guide notes several details beyond the main plot: the White Tiger amulet is put into storage after Hector Ayala’s death, Angela Del Toro is introduced, Muse appears, and the episode includes a Skrull joke. The guide also highlights Frank’s rejection of corrupt police officers using his symbol. These references reward viewers familiar with the wider Marvel story, but they do not replace the episode’s more immediate concern with symbols—legal, political, and vigilante—and who gets to wield them.
How was the episode received?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 92% Tomatometer from 12 reviews on its Episode 4 page when accessed on October 8, 2026. That is a dated aggregator snapshot, not a permanent measure of quality or a measure of audience opinion. The excerpts show a more useful distinction than the score alone: Siede praises the episode’s dark, darkly comic energy and excitement without conventional action, while Johnson questions whether the time spent with Fisk and his associates unbalances the story.
Those differing reactions point to the episode’s central trade-off. Its legal and political threads widen the picture of a city under pressure, but sometimes pull attention from Matt’s personal struggle. Its slower, less action-driven approach makes room for character tension, especially in the Frank Castle scene, but asks viewers to find momentum in dread and compromised choices rather than spectacle.
Verdict: a tense, character-led hour with a crowded center
“Sic Semper Systema” is strongest when it makes the conflict between restraint and release feel personal: Matt’s guilt draws him toward the mask, Fisk’s public composure strains against the violence surrounding him, and Torres’s testimony shows how institutions can be bent by fear. The Frank Castle reunion gives that conflict a sharp human counterpoint. The episode’s supporting threads sometimes compete for space, but its dark humor and emphasis on pressure over action give Season 1 a distinctive, unsettling hour.
