Thor is shown cradling a dying Deadpool in a brief piece of TVA footage, but Deadpool & Wolverine never explains why he is crying. Director Shawn Levy was asked the same question and said he would like to know—and would like to help answer it someday. The image’s source is known; its story meaning is not.
Who is holding Deadpool in the TVA scene?
It is Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth. In the TVA footage, he holds a seemingly dying Deadpool. The movie offers no follow-up that identifies what happened or explains Thor’s tears. TheWrap’s spoiler explainer likewise describes the image as something the film does not elaborate on.

Why is Thor crying?
The film does not give a canon explanation. Asked about Thor’s tears, Levy told Variety: “I would love to know. And I would also love to be part of answering that question someday.” His answer expresses interest in the mystery; it does not confirm that a later film will resolve it. Variety published the interview on August 6, 2024.
Where did the footage come from?
The shot is reportedly repurposed from Thor: The Dark World, according to TheWrap. That explains the image’s production origin, not what it means within Deadpool & Wolverine. The movie does not establish a particular event in Thor’s timeline, explain why he is grieving, or say what ultimately happens to this Deadpool.

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Is the scene a clue or just a tease?
It is safest to call it an unexplained visual tease. Calling it a gag is an interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from the filmmakers. Levy has discussed a general rule for surprise appearances: “Never let temptation supersede storytelling.” He and producer Wendy Jacobson also described the cameos as needing to serve the story. Those comments describe the team’s broader approach, but neither identifies a specific narrative purpose for the Thor image. The National published their comments on July 22, 2024.

The film gives a clearer identity and payoff to another surprise appearance. Chris Evans appears as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch from the earlier Fantastic Four films—not as Captain America. Co-writer Rhett Reese said the team deliberately used the audience’s expectation of Captain America as a misdirection before revealing Johnny Storm. The Los Angeles Times identifies the character as Johnny Storm / the Human Torch. Los Angeles Times coverage explains the character’s franchise connection. That cameo has an explained identity; the brief Thor footage remains unresolved.
