In an excerpt from his memoir Tumhari Auqaat Kya Hai, Piyush Mishra, Piyush Mishra recounts a dispute over writing credit on a film adapted from a play about Bhagat Singh. The narrator describes confronting the director and other industry figures, culminating in an episode the book calls the “Petrol Scandal.” The account is presented in a fictionalized voice, not as independently verified reporting.

What the memoir excerpt describes

Scroll.in published the excerpt on November 20, 2025. In the scene, the narrator returns to Mumbai for a final script narration and finds another writer being introduced as the scriptwriter. He says he had worked on the script for a year and a half and wanted recognition for the work rather than money.

The narrator then describes challenging the director and confronting other industry figures, threatening to take his script, research and play elsewhere. The account reaches its most dramatic point when he says he later met the director carrying a bottle of petrol. The memoir labels the episode the “Petrol Scandal.” These actions and the dialogue in the passage are part of the memoir’s narrative and should not be read as independently confirmed events or statements by real people.

What credit does the excerpt say he received?

The excerpt says the screenplay credit had already been locked under another writer’s name. In the narrator’s account, an agreement was eventually signed and he received a more limited acknowledgment than he had sought: the play’s name would appear onscreen as a special thanks. The passage distinguishes that acknowledgment from screenplay or dialogue credit; it does not provide an independently checked credit roll or contract.

Who is telling the story?

The passage comes from Tumhari Auqaat Kya Hai, Piyush Mishra, translated from Hindi by Shillpi A Singh and credited to HarperCollins India. Scroll describes the memoir as being told in the voice of Santap Trivedi, also known as Hamlet, an invented character from one of Mishra’s best-known plays. It also says Mishra uses pseudonyms for several well-known actors and directors. The excerpt alone does not establish which real people, if any, those pseudonyms represent.

Mishra, whom Scroll identifies as an actor, lyricist and musician, explains the memoir’s approach in its foreword: “I don’t have the courage to write an autobiography. Neither do I have the temperament. Nor the mood.” That framing matters: the “Petrol Scandal” is a scene in a fictionalized memoir voice, rather than a standalone reported investigation.
