The View’s Heated Arguments: 4 Walkouts, Threats and Tense Showdowns

Several of The View’s most heated moments ended with someone leaving the set—but not all of them. Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg actually walked out during Bill O’Reilly’s 2010 appearance; in other clashes, a departure was only threatened, playfully staged, or not reported at all. Here are the best-documented examples, with those distinctions kept clear.

Which View arguments actually ended in a walkout?

The distinction matters: a shouting match is not automatically a walkout, and a guest interview that turns contentious does not establish that a host left. ABC’s retrospective of the show’s fiery moments and the original reports support several different outcomes, from a confirmed departure to a mock exit.

Moment What happened Departure status
Bill O’Reilly and the Park51 discussion (2010) Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg left during the interview. Actual walkout
Meghan McCain and Ana Navarro McCain left the set after their exchange became heated. Actual walkoff, described by Bravo
Rosie O’Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck (2007) A heated Iraq War argument; Behar and Sherri Shepherd pretended to leave. Mock walkout by other co-hosts
Star Jones and “Rosebudd” ABC’s retrospective says Jones left during an interview. Actual walkout; date and detailed exchange not stated
Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Barbara Walters A Vanity Fair account of a book’s reporting says Hasselbeck threatened to storm off. Reported threat, not a confirmed departure
Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle (2019) The guests sparred with co-hosts during a contentious appearance. No walkout reported

Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg leave during Bill O’Reilly’s 2010 interview

The clearest example came on October 14, 2010, during a discussion with Bill O’Reilly about Park51, the proposed Muslim community center near Ground Zero. After O’Reilly said, “Muslims killed us on 9/11,” Behar stood and walked off; Goldberg followed. ABC’s contemporaneous account reports that Barbara Walters challenged O’Reilly’s generalization about Muslims and said, “You have just seen what should not happen. We should be able to have discussions without washing our hands and screaming and walking off stage.” O’Reilly apologized. ABC News reported on the walkout and exchange; CBS News Texas also covered the departure.

In a later ABC retrospective, Behar summed up the moment: “We just walked off on him.” This was not a threatened or playful exit: both co-hosts actually left the set during the interview. ABC’s retrospective revisited the show’s walk-off moments.

Meghan McCain walks off after an exchange with Ana Navarro

Bravo’s official Watch What Happens Live highlight describes McCain walking off The View set when things between her and Navarro became heated. The clip, from season 16, episode 148, also has McCain explaining why she did it. That makes this a confirmed departure in Bravo’s account, rather than merely a tense exchange. Watch Bravo’s highlight.

Rosie O’Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s Iraq War shouting match

In May 2007, O’Donnell and Hasselbeck argued over the Iraq War in a confrontation ABC later recalled as a shouting match that turned personal and played out in split screen. Behar and guest co-host Sherri Shepherd pretended to walk out to try to ease the tension. ABC’s account does not say O’Donnell or Hasselbeck left the set during this argument. O’Donnell’s later departure from the show is a separate event, not evidence that she walked off during the debate. ABC’s retrospective describes the argument and the mock exit.

Star Jones leaves during a Rosebudd interview

ABC’s retrospective also says that Star Jones, a co-host from 1997 to 2006, walked off during an interview with “Rosebudd,” whom the article describes as a former pimp. The retrospective does not give the episode date or detail the exchange, so those specifics cannot be established from that account. ABC’s account of Jones’s walkout is the basis for this entry.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck reportedly threatened to leave during a debate with Barbara Walters

Vanity Fair’s 2019 retrospective, summarizing claims in Ramin Setoodeh’s book about The View, says Hasselbeck once threatened to storm off during a heated discussion of the morning-after pill after Walters reprimanded her. This is a reported threat relayed through the book, not an independently established on-air departure in the cited account. Vanity Fair’s guide to the show’s reported feuds provides that account.

Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle’s contentious 2019 appearance

Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle’s November 7, 2019 appearance became heated as they sparred with Behar, Goldberg and other co-hosts. TIME reported that the audience responded with both boos and cheers. The report establishes a contentious interview, not a host walkout, so it belongs among the show’s heated confrontations rather than its confirmed departures. TIME covered the appearance.

What these moments show—and what they don’t

The clearest documented walkouts in these accounts are Behar and Goldberg’s exit during O’Reilly’s Park51 discussion, McCain’s walkoff after her exchange with Navarro, and Jones’s departure during the Rosebudd interview. The O’Donnell–Hasselbeck clash involved a mock walkout by Behar and Shepherd, while the Hasselbeck–Walters account describes a threat. Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle’s appearance was heated, but the cited coverage does not report anyone leaving. Those are different kinds of moments, not interchangeable examples of hosts almost walking off.
