On December 8, 2004, Nathan Gale opened fire during a Damageplan performance at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, killing guitarist Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott and three others. A responding Columbus police officer fatally shot Gale. Police said they might never know why he attacked; accounts of possible motives were allegations, not established explanations.
What happened at the Alrosa Villa?
Damageplan was performing at the Columbus nightclub on December 8, 2004, when 25-year-old Nathan Gale ran onto the stage and began shooting at the musicians and people in the crowd, according to contemporary reporting by WOSU. Darrell Abbott, 38, was killed. He was widely known as “Dimebag” Darrell and had been the guitarist for Pantera, but Damageplan was the band on stage that night.
A contemporary Associated Press report published by CBS News identified the other three people Gale killed as Erin Halk, 29, an Alrosa Villa employee; Nathan Bray, 23, a fan; and Jeff Thompson, 40, a band security employee. A responding Columbus police officer shot and killed Gale.
Who killed Dimebag Darrell?
Nathan Gale was identified by police as the gunman. The shooting killed four people, not Abbott alone: Abbott, Halk, Bray and Thompson. Gale was also killed at the scene by a responding officer, as reported by CBS/AP.

Why did Nathan Gale attack?
Police did not establish a definitive motive. WOSU reported that Sergeant Brent Mull warned investigators might never know why Gale attacked if he had left no note. Contemporary reports included allegations from people acquainted with Gale involving Pantera or the band’s lyrics, but those claims do not prove what motivated him. WOSU’s account and The Washington Post’s contemporary report describe claims and uncertainty, not a confirmed explanation.
What does the coroner record establish?
A reproduced coroner record hosted by Autopsyfiles.org lists December 8, 2004, as Abbott’s injury date and Columbus Homicide as the investigating agency. The archive hosts a reproduction; it is not the official publication site of the Columbus Division of Police or the coroner.
