30 Best Movies That Follow the Hero’s Journey

These 30 films make the hero’s journey visible across science fiction, animation, adventure, and grounded drama—without treating its stages as a rigid checklist.

These 30 films are strong examples of the hero’s journey because they make a protagonist’s departure, trials, and transformation legible—not because every one follows a fixed 12-step formula. The selection balances clarity of character change, the strength of the journey-and-return pattern, cinematic or cultural significance, and variety across genres and protagonists. The list is curated, not an objective ranking.

What is the hero’s journey in a movie?

Joseph Campbell’s monomyth describes a broad movement of departure, initiation, and return: a person leaves a familiar condition, undergoes a consequential experience, and comes back changed, often with something that can benefit others. Campbell described it as “leaving one condition, finding the source of life to bring you forth in a richer or more mature or other condition” in his conversation with Bill Moyers on PBS.

The familiar 12-stage version is a later storytelling adaptation, not a definitive checklist. Vancouver Film School distinguishes Campbell’s three broad movements from Christopher Vogler’s popular 12-stage model, and Teach with Movies notes that stages may combine, overlap, appear out of order, or be absent. The films below are useful examples of the pattern, but their stories need not fit every stage.

What movies follow the hero’s journey?

The order is for browsing, not a ranking. Each entry focuses on the distinctive shape of the protagonist’s journey rather than assigning all 12 stages.

1. Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

Luke Skywalker leaves his life on a desert farm and enters a conflict larger than himself. Obi-Wan Kenobi introduces him to the Force, while the journey through the galaxy subjects him to danger, loss, and an ordeal that changes what he can do. Joseph Campbell called the cycle in Star Wars “perfect.” This entry is about Luke’s arc in the original film, not a claim that the entire franchise forms one self-contained journey.

2. The Matrix (1999)

Thomas Anderson’s curiosity about the white rabbit pulls him from ordinary life into the Matrix and the reality behind it. The passage from uncertainty to Neo’s new capacity makes the transformation unusually visible: he learns to act within a world whose rules he once mistook for reality. The film is also among the works examined through the monomyth in Donald E. Palumbo’s 2014 book, The Monomyth in American Science Fiction Films.

3. Men in Black (1997)

James Edwards is recruited into a hidden world of alien activity and becomes Agent J. Agent K serves as mentor, while the erasure of J’s former identity marks a sharp break with his previous life. The film makes the journey comic and procedural rather than mythic in tone, showing how the pattern can work beyond fantasy adventure. The New York Film Academy discusses the film’s recruitment and identity change in its monomyth examples.

4. The Hunger Games (2012)

Katniss Everdeen’s entry into the Capitol and the arena separates her from the life she knows and tests her survival, judgment, and alliances. Her journey is not simply about winning a contest: the trials force her to navigate a system that turns people into spectacle. The New York Film Academy identifies the Capitol, arena, alliances, and competition as the film’s initiation arc in its discussion of film monomyths.

5. The Lion King (1994)

After leaving the Pride Lands, Simba grows up in exile with Timon and Pumbaa before facing the possibility of return. His movement from avoidance toward responsibility gives the film a clear transformation and community dimension. Calling this a hero’s journey is one interpretive reading, not the only way to understand the story; the New York Film Academy outlines this exile-and-return pattern in its film examples.

6. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Dorothy is carried from Kansas into the unfamiliar world of Oz, where the road home becomes a series of trials shared with companions who also want something they believe they lack. The journey’s return is literal, but its emotional force comes from how the adventure reshapes Dorothy’s understanding of home.

7. Spirited Away (2001)

Chihiro crosses into a spirit world and must work, adapt, and remember who she is in order to rescue her parents and return. Her transformation is gradual rather than a sudden acquisition of power: courage and care emerge through repeated acts of responsibility in a strange environment.

8. Moana (2016)

Moana leaves her island to restore what her community needs, crossing an ocean that is both a physical threshold and a test of identity. Her encounters with Maui and the voyage’s dangers expand her understanding of leadership, ancestry, and her own capacity to act.

9. Mulan (1998)

Mulan departs from the expected role assigned to her and enters military life under a concealed identity. Training, battle, and the risk of discovery test both skill and self-understanding. Her return matters because what she has learned changes her relationship with family and community.

10. Black Panther (2018)

T’Challa’s challenge is not simply to claim a throne but to decide what kind of king he will be. Encounters with allies, rivals, and the consequences of Wakanda’s isolation turn succession into a moral journey, with the final transformation expressed through a changed relationship between the nation and the wider world.

11. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Frodo leaves the Shire carrying a burden whose danger grows as he travels. Mentors and companions help him through an expanding series of trials, but the film also complicates the idea that a hero’s journey ends with a triumphant return: the quest remains unfinished, and its cost is already changing him.

12. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

The concluding film brings Frodo and Sam through the final ordeal of the quest while Aragorn faces a different kind of return: accepting the public responsibility of kingship. Together, their arcs show that transformation can be personal, communal, and political—and that the person who returns may not simply resume an old life.

13. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

Bilbo Baggins is drawn from a settled domestic routine into a dangerous expedition with dwarves. The adventure tests his nerve and resourcefulness long before he sees himself as heroic, making the film a clear example of a reluctant protagonist discovering capacities through travel and trial.

14. Finding Nemo (2003)

Marlin’s journey across the ocean begins as a search for his son, but the unfamiliar world also challenges his fear and need for control. Dory becomes an unlikely ally, and the trials gradually teach Marlin to trust Nemo’s independence rather than protect him from every risk.

15. Toy Story (1995)

Woody’s world changes when Buzz Lightyear arrives and threatens his place as Andy’s favorite toy. Separation, rivalry, and the effort to get back home force Woody to reconsider his status and learn cooperation. Its small domestic scale shows that the journey’s “other world” need not be supernatural or far away.

16. Kung Fu Panda (2008)

Po is unexpectedly chosen for a role he does not seem prepared to fill. Training under Shifu and confronting Tai Lung turn the familiar underdog arc into a story about discovering what strength means on one’s own terms, rather than trying to become someone else.

17. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Hiccup’s encounter with Toothless takes him beyond his community’s assumptions about dragons. His trials test loyalty to family alongside independent judgment; his transformation changes not only his own place in the village but the relationship between the community and the creatures it fears.

18. The NeverEnding Story (1984)

Bastian enters Fantasia through a book, while Atreyu undertakes a quest within the story to save that world. The film makes storytelling itself part of the passage between ordinary life and adventure, and its parallel journeys ask what it means to take an active role rather than remain a spectator.

19. The Princess Bride (1987)

Westley’s quest to reunite with Buttercup is shaped by separation, danger, and a sequence of sharply distinct trials. The film plays with adventure conventions rather than treating them solemnly, making it a useful example of how the journey structure can support parody as well as earnest transformation.

20. Groundhog Day (1993)

Phil Connors is trapped in a repeating day rather than sent to a distant land. Each repetition becomes a trial, and the real journey is ethical and emotional: he moves from self-interest toward attention to other people. Its structure shows how initiation can be built from repeated encounters instead of physical travel.

21. The Truman Show (1998)

Truman Burbank begins to question the limits of his apparently ordinary life and follows evidence toward a hidden reality. His departure is an act of recognition and choice, and the final crossing of a literal boundary gives the story a return-structure twist: the goal is not to bring a boon back to the old world, but to leave the world that defined him.

22. Erin Brockovich (2000)

Erin’s investigation into contaminated water begins with an unexpected job and develops into a long campaign on behalf of affected residents. This is a grounded, non-fantasy journey: research, setbacks, and community relationships are the trials, while her growing ability to challenge powerful institutions marks the transformation.

23. Hidden Figures (2016)

Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson each navigate barriers within a workplace and society that restrict their opportunities. Rather than force three distinct lives into one solitary-hero template, the film presents achievement as collective and institutional: knowledge and persistence change what the community can accomplish.

24. Whale Rider (2002)

Pai’s journey unfolds within her own community as she seeks recognition and a way to serve its future. The obstacle is not a distant monster or wilderness but a tradition that does not imagine her as its next leader. Her transformation challenges the boundaries of who can carry responsibility.

25. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Furiosa’s escape from Immortan Joe turns flight across the wasteland into a journey toward a different future for the people she is helping. Max joins the struggle, but Furiosa’s decisions and transformation anchor the film’s movement from survival toward the possibility of a changed community.

26. The Terminator (1984)

Sarah Connor is pulled into a future conflict she did not know existed and must survive an enemy pursuing her in the present. Her passage from ordinary life toward the person required by that future gives the film a stark transformation arc. The film appears among the science-fiction works analyzed through the monomyth in Palumbo’s 2014 study.

27. Tron (1982)

Kevin Flynn is transported into a computer-generated world where survival depends on learning its rules and confronting the power that controls it. His journey literalizes entry into an unfamiliar realm, while the shift from outsider to active participant makes the transformation easy to trace. Palumbo’s 2014 book includes Tron among its film analyses.

28. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Admiral Kirk’s confrontation with Khan tests more than tactical skill: it brings the consequences of earlier choices and the reality of aging into a new crisis. The film’s journey is less a novice’s initiation than a return to danger that forces its protagonist to reconsider leadership, sacrifice, and what he owes others.

29. Dune (1984)

Paul Atreides is displaced from privilege into the harsh conditions of Arrakis, where survival and political upheaval converge. The film presents a journey toward power and identity, but its uncertainty about what Paul’s rise will mean makes it a more complicated monomyth example than a straightforward triumph. Palumbo’s book discusses the Frank Herbert’s Dune miniseries as a television production, not this film; the distinction matters when describing the book’s scope.

30. Logan’s Run (1976)

Logan begins as an enforcer of his society’s rules, then is forced to question them and flee beyond the world he once served. The journey’s central transformation is a change in belief: the destination matters because it offers a different possibility for human life. Logan’s Run is among the films covered in Palumbo’s 2014 study.

Does every hero’s journey movie need all 12 stages?

No. Campbell’s broad departure, initiation, and return pattern is not identical to Vogler’s later 12-stage adaptation, and neither requires every story to include every stage in a fixed order. A protagonist may lack a formal mentor, face several trials at once, return changed without returning home, or leave the journey unfinished at the end of one film. The useful question is whether the pattern clarifies the character’s change—not whether a film can be made to fill every box.

Why include more than fantasy and male-centered adventure?

The journey is often presented through male heroes and action-adventure, but that is not the full range of stories the framework can illuminate. Teach with Movies notes that its recommended films include non-action/adventure stories, and an Ohio University film-studies thesis raises questions about gendered limits in traditional applications of mythic structures. Including women protagonists, ensemble journeys, grounded dramas, and stories about community makes the framework more useful while avoiding the assumption that one hero template explains every film equally well.
