The 2024 U.S. summer movie season has passed, but its slate ranged well beyond blockbuster sequels: audiences had studio franchises, animation, independent dramas, and streaming releases to choose from. This retrospective highlights representative films announced for the season; it is not a verified reconstruction of the 34 picks in Collider’s original preview.
How to read this 2024 summer preview
There was no single season boundary used by every guide. The Associated Press’s summer guide covered films scheduled for theaters and streaming from May through Labor Day, while Box Office Mojo defines its Summer 2024 domestic box-office table as May 3 through September 2. Release dates below are the dates announced at the time, not recommendations about where to watch a film now.
The examples are drawn from contemporary studio announcements and season guides. Collider’s exact-title search result confirms a preview of 34 movies, but its article could not be independently checked; the titles here therefore should not be read as its complete or exact selection.
Franchise films and familiar worlds
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Disney announced this new installment for May 10, 2024, describing a story set generations after War for the Planet of the Apes. The studio said the previous three Planet of the Apes films had earned a combined $1.6 billion worldwide; that figure is Disney’s own reported total, not an independently presented box-office calculation. Other films on contemporary season guides
The AP’s June listings also included Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Janet Planet, and Fancy Dance, alongside Hit Man on Netflix. TIME’s May 21 anticipation list included Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and the animated film Robot Dreams. These lists were editorial selections, not a single exhaustive calendar, and they provide useful evidence of the season’s range rather than proof of Collider’s precise 34 entries. Summer movie calendars were not solely theatrical schedules. The AP guide covered both theater and streaming releases and listed Hit Man as a June Netflix release. That is a historical schedule reference; it does not establish the film’s current availability on a service. The same distinction applies to other past release plans: a date announced in 2024 is not a present-day viewing option.
What the box office record says about two titles
Box Office Mojo’s displayed Summer 2024 domestic table reported a “Gross” of $650,825,110 for Inside Out 2 and $603,907,246 for Deadpool & Wolverine. These are figures in that table’s seasonal context, whose window is May 3–September 2, 2024; they should not be confused with the table’s separate “Total Gross” measure. The page can update, so the figures here are attributed to the table as accessed in 2026. Box Office Mojo’s Summer 2024 domestic table.
Why studios promote a summer slate
In NBCUniversal’s April 11, 2024 CinemaCon report, studio group chairman and chief content officer Donna Langley said: “We believe our best year should always be in front of us and our best projects always in the pipeline, because that’s what keeps people excited and coming back for more.” The remark reflects a studio’s promotional perspective, rather than an independent assessment of the films.
