This ranked selection covers the 20 entries visible in a reproduction of Collider’s April 10, 2025, list of movies about missing persons: positions 25 through 6. The reproduction did not include positions 1–5, so they are not guessed at here. The films range from noir and dark comedy to psychological and screen-life mysteries, making tone and point of view useful ways to choose what to watch.

The order below follows the positions shown in the accessible reproduction of Collider’s ranking. Brief descriptions reflect that entertainment article’s framing; they are not independent assessments of the films or of real cases depicted in them.

7. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

-
6. Searching
Like Missing, this is a screen-life mystery that uses digital interfaces as a major storytelling device. The two make a useful pairing if that format is what you want to watch.
How to choose by tone and storytelling style
- For dark comedy: The Nice Guys is the list’s explicitly darkly comic mystery.
- For noir: Try The Lady Vanishes, Klute, or Night Moves.
- For psychological uncertainty: The source groups I See You, Shutter Island, and Bunny Lake Is Missing among psychological mysteries.
- For a particularly tense family-centered story: Prisoners follows parents reacting to their daughters’ disappearance.
- For screen-life storytelling: Choose Searching or Missing, both of which make digital interfaces central to the storytelling.
Which films are connected to real cases or source material?
The source article associates Mississippi Burning, Changeling, Lost Girls, and All Good Things with real cases or source material, but uses different kinds of connections, including “loosely based” and “inspired.” Those labels are not interchangeable, and they do not show that each film is equally faithful to history. For Lost Girls, the named book by Robert Kolker is a specific source-material lead; for the others, this list alone is not enough to establish case details. Treat the films as dramatizations rather than factual accounts.
