The clearest documented examples show different approaches: loose clothing and props, camera concealment, and digital effects. Gal Gadot’s case also involved a separately reported effort to keep her pregnancy private from coworkers.
What “hidden on set” means in these cases
There are two different kinds of concealment: keeping a pregnancy private from coworkers, and keeping it invisible to viewers. Reporting often establishes the second without showing that the actress wanted secrecy backstage. Nor is hiding a pregnancy the only option: a production may incorporate it into a character’s story instead.
The examples below are limited to cases where the cited reporting describes pregnancy during production and a relevant concealment method or storyline choice. They do not establish a definitive roster of 15 actresses who personally tried to hide pregnancies from everyone on set.
Documented examples of on-screen concealment
Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman
Gadot’s case involves both kinds of concealment, and they should not be conflated. ELLE reported that she did not want coworkers to know she was pregnant because she feared being treated differently. Separately, TIME described how production used green fabric in later photography and digital effects to hide her bump from the camera. ELLE’s reporting on Gadot’s reason and TIME’s account of the visual-effects approach concern distinct parts of the story.

Kerry Washington in Scandal
Washington’s pregnancy was kept out of the story because Olivia Pope was not pregnant. ABC News reported on how the production handled the real pregnancy while maintaining the character’s separate storyline. This supports on-screen concealment; it does not, by itself, establish that Washington hid the pregnancy from cast and crew. ABC News’ account of Washington on Scandal.
Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City
PopCrush describes billowy clothing used to disguise Parker’s bump during filming. That is a wardrobe solution for the camera, not evidence that the pregnancy was kept secret from coworkers. PopCrush’s roundup of performers filming while pregnant.

Shelley Long in Cheers
TIME reports that Long’s pregnancy during the 1984–85 season was hidden from the camera. The same retrospective contrasts her case with Rhea Perlman’s: Perlman’s pregnancy was incorporated into her character’s story. The contrast shows that a production could either disguise a pregnancy or make it part of the plot. TIME’s retrospective on pregnant performers.
Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders in How I Met Your Mother
PopCrush describes purses, coats, and layered clothing used to conceal pregnancies from viewers. It also notes that Hannigan’s bump was incorporated into a hot-dog-eating scene. That example illustrates how a series can use concealment in some moments and acknowledge a pregnancy through a gag without making it part of the character’s ongoing story. PopCrush’s account of the show’s approaches.

How productions kept pregnancies out of the frame
The reported methods are practical production choices, not a proven ranking of what works best. A show or film can combine them, and the evidence here does not compare their effectiveness.
- Wardrobe: Billowy clothing and layered outfits can disguise a bump, as reported for Parker, Hannigan, and Smulders.
- Props and framing: Purses, coats, and camera composition can place an object or angle between the performer and the viewer.
- Visual effects: TIME reported digital work and green fabric used to conceal Gadot’s bump in later Wonder Woman photography.
- Story integration: A production may write the pregnancy into the character’s plot, as TIME reports for Perlman on Cheers, or use a moment of story-level humor, as reported for Hannigan on How I Met Your Mother.
Why a 15-name list needs qualification
A 2025 24/7 Tempo roundup titled Pregnant While Filming: 15 Actresses Who Worked Through Their Trimesters supplies a broader pool of names, including Reese Witherspoon, Halle Berry, Lisa Kudrow, Melissa Fumero, Ellen Pompeo, Gina Rodriguez, Mandy Moore, Hayden Panettiere, Courteney Cox, Amy Poehler, Angela Kinsey, and Kelly Rutherford, as well as several performers discussed above. But the roundup includes pregnancies integrated into characters’ stories as well as cases of concealment. Its 15 entries therefore cannot be treated as a verified list of actresses who tried to hide pregnancies from everyone on set. 24/7 Tempo’s 2025 list.

For the cases described here, the strongest conclusion is specific: productions sometimes concealed a real pregnancy from viewers, using clothing, props, camera choices, or effects, while other productions adapted the story. Only Gadot’s stated reason in the cited coverage supports a claim about why an actress wanted coworkers not to know.
