| Character | What happens | Effect on the story |
|---|---|---|
| Jane Pocock | She dies by suicide while imprisoned, before William and Jamie arrive to free her. | Her death devastates William and leads him to bring her younger sister, Fanny, to Jamie and Claire. |
| Rollo | Ian wakes to find that his dog has died during the night. | Ian grieves the loss, with Rachel beside him as they prepare to bury Rollo. |
The two losses land differently. Jane’s death changes the course of William’s effort to help her and shapes what happens to Fanny; Rollo’s death is a quieter personal loss for Ian.
Why William and Jamie try to save Jane
Jane is in custody after confessing to killing Harkness. With martial law in effect, she faces execution without a trial. William asks Lord John for help finding her, then joins Jamie in trying to reach her. They arrive too late.

- The American Revolution has arrived, and the Frasers must navigate the perils of war to protect what they have built. They learn that sometimes to defend what you love, you have to leave it behind. As the conflict draws them into the heart of this fight for independence, Jamie and Claire arefaced with impossible decisions that have the potential to tear their family apart.
William and Jamie take a lock of Jane’s hair for Fanny, her younger sister. William brings the grieving girl to Jamie and Claire, and Jamie offers her a home and protection at Fraser’s Ridge. William’s attempt to save Jane comes from a sense of responsibility; after her death, he is left devastated.
That shared effort begins to draw William and Jamie closer, but does not settle the strain between them. William later asks Jamie about his conception and his mother, Geneva. Jamie says he did not force Geneva and accepts responsibility for what happened. Their conversation opens a difficult path toward a relationship rather than resolving William’s questions about his identity.

What happens to Rollo?
Ian wakes and realizes Rollo died overnight. He believes Rollo waited until he had returned. Rachel supports him as they prepare to bury the dog, giving the episode’s second death a subdued, intimate tone alongside Jane’s devastating story.
Could Claire and Jamie’s daughter, Faith, have survived?
The finale raises the possibility but does not confirm it. While Claire recovers from a serious operation, she believes she sees Master Raymond. He asks her forgiveness and says she will understand someday; Jamie says he saw no visitor.

- The fifth season of Outlander sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie?s fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America.
Later, Fanny sings a song Claire used to sing to Faith, and a locket associated with Fanny’s mother bears the name “Faith.” Claire tells Jamie, “I think Faith lived.” The clues suggest a connection between Fanny and Claire and Jamie’s first daughter, but the episode leaves the truth unresolved. TVLine notes that the possibility has also been touched on in Diana Gabaldon’s later novels; the finale itself does not establish that Faith survived or confirm a biological relationship.
