Spoilers for “Ride or Die,” Season 1, Episode 9. The penultimate episode delivers the relationship payoff Tony and Ziva’s story has been building toward: they say “I love you” onscreen, while flashbacks reveal why they once reached their wedding day but did not marry. In the present, danger to their daughter Tali keeps the hour from becoming a romance-only detour—and leaves the central threat unresolved with one episode to go.

Episode-specific coverage supplies the plot details the official synopsis leaves out. Tony and Ziva’s pursuit of Jonah and Aaron Graves collides with the immediate danger around their family. Martine kills Graves, and Tali is kidnapped by Graves’ associates. Ziva chooses to prioritize reaching Tony when their locations and plans pull them in different directions, while Tony walks into a dangerous confrontation. Those reported events raise the stakes, but the episode does not settle the season’s larger conspiracy.
Why didn’t Tony and Ziva get married?
Flashbacks bring the pair to their wedding day, then show how unresolved trust and communication problems kept them from going through with the marriage. The wedding history is not framed simply as one sudden blowup: coverage describes a conversation in which both recognize what is not working. That context gives the present-day relationship conflict a more specific history than a generalized reluctance to commit.

The flashbacks also make the episode’s romantic turn feel earned rather than detached from the action. Tony and Ziva have to reckon with the choices that shaped their past before they can speak plainly in the present.
Tony and Ziva finally say “I love you”
The episode’s defining relationship moment is explicit: Tony and Ziva tell each other “I love you” onscreen for the first time. In a TV Insider interview about the scene, Cote de Pablo, who plays Ziva, said, “The fans have waited forever and ever and ever.” It is a long-awaited milestone, but it does not erase the couple’s history or magically resolve the danger surrounding them.

That balance is what makes the emotional beat work: the declaration arrives alongside urgent choices about Tali and the threat they are facing, not in a safe pause outside the story. The romance advances while the family remains at risk.
Is the spinoff finally getting good?
As a critical judgment, “Ride or Die” makes the strongest case yet for the season’s emotional engine. The first onscreen “I love you” is a concrete payoff; the wedding flashbacks explain why the relationship stalled; and the danger to Tali gives the present-day plot momentum. The episode-specific reporting supports those story developments, while how effectively they land is a matter of taste.

It is also a penultimate episode, not a finale. Paramount+ announced a 10-episode season that began September 4, 2025, with three episodes, followed by weekly Thursday releases and an October 23 finale. “Ride or Die” therefore advances the personal story while setting up the final chapter. The official synopsis promises fear and an enemy in sight, but not resolution.
Fangirlish reviewer Lissete Lanuza Sáenz called it “in many ways, the episode fans of Tony and Ziva had been waiting for.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measure of audience consensus. Rotten Tomatoes displayed two critic reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026—a small snapshot, not a robust rating statistic.
