Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitch on October 27, 2024, during the final stretch of that year’s presidential campaign. They played Madden NFL before Walz switched to Crazy Taxi, a game he connected to his earlier years playing Sega Dreamcast.
What happened on the Twitch stream?
Walz and Ocasio-Cortez began with Madden NFL: Walz played as the Minnesota Vikings against Ocasio-Cortez’s Buffalo Bills. The game was 0–0 at halftime. As they played, they talked about access to homebuying, affordable housing, student loan debt and the federal minimum wage. Walz joked, “I don’t know how to punt. The last time I punted was on like Madden 98,” and added, “If you can learn to punt on Madden, you can vote,” according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Walz then played Crazy Taxi, the arcade-style driving game in which players pick up passengers and take them to destinations for cash. Ocasio-Cortez also showed viewers her Stardew Valley farm. PC Gamer reported that Walz called Crazy Taxi his favorite and said, “If you haven’t got it, go get this game people, it is really sweet.”
What did Walz say about Crazy Taxi and the Dreamcast?
Walz recalled buying a Sega Dreamcast when he got his first real job and described himself as a “first-generation gamer,” as reported by the Star Tribune and PC Gamer. He also joked, “The Republicans will accuse me of never having a Dreamcast or something,” according to PC Gamer.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose form on eof 4 different drivers, and cruise the city in you cab looking for fares
- Rack up points by getting your fares there as fast as possible -- get em there faster by performing crazy stunts
- Start weaving between cars without scratching up your car, do jumps, or sliding around corners to get the fare there faster
- Play in 3, 5 or 10 minute rounds
- Try out Crazy Box, the mode that makes things harder & crazier as you go
That recollection is not evidence that the Twitch gameplay ran on an original Dreamcast. PC Gamer noted Walz referred to an Xbox controller during the stream; the reports do not establish the complete technical setup used for the broadcast.
How many people watched, and why was the stream political?
The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that more than 12,000 viewers watched on Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitch channel. It said more watched from Vice President Kamala Harris’ channel but did not give a second figure or a combined total.
Rank #2
- As a fearless cab driver with attitude, your goal is to rack up the mega-bucks before your shift ends. It's a race against the clock as you pick up passengers and white-knuckle it through busy streets and back alleys to their various destinations. To keep that meter collecting cash, you've gotta take the fastest route possible, even if it means bending the traffic laws--just a little. So get a grip on the wheel, sharpen your senses, and don't lose your cool.
The appearance was presented as campaign outreach to young men, a framing reported by the Star Tribune. The audience count alone does not show whether the stream persuaded viewers or changed votes; the cited coverage does not establish an effect on voter behavior.
What was the House speaker controversy?
An edited clip from the livestream later circulated with the claim that Walz offered Ocasio-Cortez the House speakership. AFP’s October 30, 2024 fact-check found that interpretation false: the conversation concerned committee gavels, and the circulating edit left out that context. AFP also noted that the House elects its Speaker, not the White House. Read the AFP fact-check for the clip’s context.
