Predator: Badlands changes the franchise’s point of view: instead of centering an unknowable alien hunter as the threat, it follows a young Predator as its protagonist and pairs him with an unlikely ally. That shift toward adventure, humor, and emotional connection makes “Disneyfication” a fair question—but not an established fact. Disney owns and distributes the film; that alone does not prove the studio dictated its tone. The stronger case rests on what the released movie does with suspense, violence, comedy, and character.
What does “Disneyfication” mean here?
The term is a criticism, not a neutral description. In this context, it suggests that a franchise once associated with frightening, adult-oriented action has been softened or made more broadly accessible through humor, sentiment, and a more sympathetic point of view. To assess that claim, it helps to separate three things: who owns the franchise, how the new film is marketed, and what the movie itself feels like.
Disney’s corporate coverage presents Badlands as an expansion of the franchise. That is evidence of the studio’s framing, not proof that the film succeeds artistically or that its choices were imposed by ownership. An independent description offers a different kind of evidence: the Associated Press characterizes the film’s tone as a combination of “slapstick humor and operatic violence.” That contrast—comedy alongside spectacular brutality—is more useful to the argument than the Disney label by itself. Associated Press review.
How different is it from the original Predator?
The contrast is real, but the original was not a single-genre template. Predator, directed by John McTiernan, was released on June 12, 1987, and rated R by 20th Century Studios. Director Dan Trachtenberg has described its progression as moving from military action into horror, slasher, and science fiction: “That was the first time I had ever seen a movie like that, that started out as a military action movie, then became a horror movie, then a slasher movie, then a science-fiction movie.” 20th Century Studios’ Predator page; Trachtenberg interview published by Disney+.

That history matters. Genre shifts are part of the series’ identity, so a move toward adventure or comedy cannot, on its own, prove that the franchise has been diluted. The more precise question is whether Badlands changes the balance so far that dread and vulnerability give way to a different kind of pleasure.
What changes in Badlands?
The Predator becomes a character to follow
Official Disney coverage describes the story as following Dek, a young Predator exiled from his clan, who finds an unlikely ally. Elle Fanning stars, and Trachtenberg directs. That setup puts the alien on the protagonist’s side of the story rather than leaving him as the mysterious force being hunted—or feared—by human characters. Official Predator: Badlands page.

That perspective change can make the Predator more legible and emotionally accessible. It also alters suspense: the audience is asked to invest in the character’s journey, not simply wonder what the hunter is capable of. This is a meaningful departure from the original film’s central tension, but it is also a franchise-expansion choice, not a verdict on whether the movie is “soft.”
Humor and feeling share space with violence
The AP’s description of slapstick humor beside operatic violence captures the film’s apparent tonal wager. Comedy can puncture menace; it can also make a violent spectacle feel stranger, more exhilarating, or less solemn. Whether that balance weakens horror depends on how the finished scenes handle timing, sound, point of view, and consequences—not merely on the presence of jokes or emotion.

Trachtenberg has described the film as “a real, giant, visceral thrill ride” with “an enormous, heaping dose of heart and emotionality,” comparing the relationship between Prey and The Terminator to that between Badlands and T2. That is a director’s account of intent and scale, not independent proof of the movie’s effect. Trachtenberg interview published by Disney+.
Does the film abandon the franchise’s horror roots?
Not on the evidence available here. The original’s horror was part of a hybrid structure, and the AP’s account of Badlands still includes violence—described as operatic—even as it emphasizes slapstick. What changes most clearly is the balance of ingredients and the audience’s relationship to the Predator. Calling that shift “Disneyfication” is an interpretation; it is not an established consensus or a measurable finding.

A persuasive case for the label would need to show, through the film itself, that suspense is repeatedly undercut, violence is presented without meaningful danger, or emotional reassurance displaces the franchise’s capacity to unsettle. A case against it could point to the continued force of the violence and the series’ longstanding willingness to change genres. The sources cited here establish the tonal contrast and creative framing, but do not settle that close reading for every viewer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is Badlands set so far in the future?
Badlands is set at least 300 years in the future; TIME reports that no specific year is given. Trachtenberg said the distance helped the filmmakers avoid continuity conflicts with the Predator and Alien franchises: “The secret sauce was setting our movie the furthest into the future among both the Predator and Alien franchises so that we did not have to worry about stepping on anyone’s toes.” That choice supports a larger franchise canvas, though it does not by itself establish a tonal change.
