Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for the 2024 Academy Award for supporting actor for playing Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer—and won. The result made the performance a landmark in his career, but its significance goes beyond the trophy: a star audiences strongly associate with Tony Stark took on a role built around restraint. It is a persuasive case for giving established performers more parts that challenge their familiar screen identities, not proof that Hollywood as a whole has run short of good roles for stars.
From Oscar nomination to first win
The Academy announced Downey’s supporting-actor nomination on January 23, 2024. At the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, he won for Oppenheimer, which was among the films released in 2023 honored at the ceremony. The Academy’s nominations announcement explains that members of its 18 branches nominate in their respective categories; actors nominate actors, for example. The ceremony record confirms Downey’s win.
It was his third overall Oscar nomination. His earlier acting nominations were for Chaplin (1992) and Tropic Thunder (2008); Oppenheimer brought his first win. The Associated Press describes the nomination as his third and notes that he also won supporting-actor honors at the Golden Globes, BAFTA Film Awards, SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards that season. The AP’s ceremony report also records his acceptance-speech thanks to his “terrible childhood” and the Academy “— in that order.”
Why Lewis Strauss felt like a departure
Downey’s account of playing Strauss points to a challenge different from the qualities that made Tony Stark so recognizable. In a 2024 W Magazine interview, he said that “containment and being still” did not always come easily to him. He described Christopher Nolan’s invitation as a chance to turn the mirror toward an unexplored part of himself, and called the collaboration “a leap of faith with Chris. The contrast is not simply between a superhero movie and a historical drama. It is between a character audiences know for expressive speed and comic energy and a performance that asks them to watch for control and stillness. In The Ringer, critic Adam Nayman interpreted Strauss as a slow burn after Downey’s association with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is a critical reading, but it captures what makes the casting and performance interesting: the role gives a familiar star a different dramatic register. Nayman’s essay develops that interpretation.
Chaplin, Tony Stark and Strauss: three different invitations
Downey told W that there were three roles he became “completely obsessed with the possibility of playing”: Charlie Chaplin, Tony Stark and Lewis Strauss. The three parts are useful markers of range, though they are not interchangeable tests of acting or writing.

The award chronology is documented by the Television Academy’s Downey biography. Its record shows that an Oscar win followed two acting nominations; it does not establish that one kind of role is inherently better than another. What the progression makes visible is how a major performer can move among very different kinds of material.
What the Oscar does—and does not—prove about roles for stars
Downey’s win is evidence that a distinctive role can let a familiar star surprise audiences and earn major recognition. His own description of Strauss gives the argument substance: the part required him to work against an impulse toward motion and expression. A role with a specific dramatic point of view can make an actor’s well-known screen presence feel newly useful rather than merely repeated.

But one actor’s nominations and win cannot show that the industry generally offers too few strong roles to established stars. The available award records and interviews do not measure how often stars receive distinctive parts, compare scripts across the industry or establish a shortage. “We need better movies for our stars” is therefore an argument about what worthwhile roles can do—not a statistical finding. The practical point is to look beyond a star’s familiar persona and ask whether the material gives the performer something meaningful to play.
