This is an editorial list of artists who have drawn conspicuous criticism or controversy in public hip-hop discourse, not a claim that they are objectively or universally “the most hated.” The choices below reflect the historical examples in Complex’s 2012 feature and the limits of more recent polling; they are not a measured contemporary ranking.
What “most hate” means—and what it does not
“Hate” can mean several different things: negative survey responses, online criticism, objections to an artist’s music or public persona, or rivalry between fan bases. Those measures are not interchangeable. A viral backlash can make an artist highly visible without showing how many people dislike them, and controversy alone is not a measure of public opinion.
For this list, “gets hate” refers to artists whom the available historical editorial coverage connected with notable public criticism. It does not assert that each artist is currently widely disliked, that all criticism is justified, or that the names can be reliably ordered from most to least disliked. The list is deliberately framed as a set of examples, not a scorecard.
13 rappers associated with public criticism
Complex’s David Drake wrote in 2012, “Hate is a constant in hip-hop.” That is an editorial observation, not a measured finding. Complex’s November 20, 2012 feature, “The 17 Most Hated On Rappers (Right Now),” is the only directly titled ranking identified for this topic. Its explanations describe discourse at that time; they should not be treated as a current consensus or universal account of why audiences criticize artists. The 13 names below are an editorial selection from the artists discussed in that historical feature, not a new polling result.

Drake
Complex’s 2012 framing placed Drake amid criticism tied to his commercial success and the way listeners interpreted his musical identity. That historical discussion does not establish how audiences view him now.
-
Nicki Minaj
The feature associated criticism of Minaj with gendered expectations and reactions to her public persona. Those are Complex’s interpretations of the debate in 2012, not a claim that all criticism of her has the same cause.
-
Wale
Complex included Wale in its account of rappers who attracted negative commentary. The inclusion is evidence of that article’s editorial judgment, not a survey measurement of his audience or a claim about present-day sentiment.

Tyler, the Creator
Complex’s feature situated Tyler within debates over provocative artistic choices and public presentation. Criticism of creative work or persona should not be confused with a measured count of people who dislike an artist.
-
Flo Rida
The 2012 feature’s discussion of Flo Rida reflected criticism around commercial success and musical choices. That characterization belongs to Complex’s account of the period, not to a current audience-wide assessment.

French Montana
Complex included French Montana as an artist subject to criticism in its 2012 list. The source does not turn that editorial inclusion into a comparable negative-opinion statistic.
-
Insane Clown Posse
The group’s place in Complex’s list reflected genre expectations and strong reactions to its musical identity. A conspicuous divide in taste does not, by itself, tell us what proportion of listeners hold a negative view.

Young Jeezy
Complex included Young Jeezy among its examples of rappers drawing negative commentary in 2012. That historical mention should not be read as proof of present-day hostility or a place in an objective ranking.
What later polling says about Drake and Kendrick Lamar
More recent polling provides a useful example of why a feud should not be mistaken for a general “most hated” ranking. YouGov surveyed 2,000 US adults online on May 1–2, 2024, including 652 people interested in hip-hop. Among hip-hop fans, 18% said the Drake–Kendrick Lamar feud improved their opinion of Drake and 13% said it worsened it. For Lamar, 21% said it improved their opinion and 8% said it worsened it. These are responses about the effect of that feud on opinion—not the share who dislike either artist, and not a comparison with other rappers. YouGov’s May 2024 opinion poll.
A separate YouGov survey fielded May 10–14, 2024 asked 2,334 US adults, including 981 hip-hop fans, about reactions to tracks in the feud. Its subject was song reactions, not a ranking of the artists people dislike most. YouGov’s survey on reactions to the feud’s songs.
Why this is not a definitive ranking
- No comparable current measure: The available material does not establish a trustworthy current figure for how many people dislike any rapper or a comparable ranking across artists.
- Different kinds of criticism: Objections to music, public conduct, controversy, and fan rivalry should be distinguished rather than collapsed into one supposed hate score.
- Different audiences and time periods: Complex’s list dates to 2012; the YouGov figures are US polling from 2024 about a specific feud. Neither supports a universal, present-day ordering of rappers.
- Visibility is not prevalence: Social-media activity and controversy can show that criticism is happening, but without representative measurement they cannot establish how common it is.
A Reddit discussion uses the question “Most hated rapper in hiphop?” as an informal prompt. One discussion cannot establish common search phrasing or public sentiment. The Reddit discussion.
