‘Young Sherlock’ Review: Guy Ritchie’s Action-Forward Origin Story Reimagines Holmes

Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock trades the familiar Baker Street setup for an action-forward origin story in 1870s Oxford. Here’s who may enjoy its fast pace—and who may find it rushed.

Young Sherlock is worth a look if you want a lively, action-heavy take on Holmes rather than a restrained, case-of-the-week detective drama. Set in 1870s Oxford, it follows a rebellious 19-year-old Sherlock as a murder investigation draws him into a wider conspiracy—and into an early friendship with James Moriarty.

What is Young Sherlock about?

In this eight-episode Prime Video series, Sherlock Holmes is not yet the established Baker Street detective. Sent to Oxford to reform his behavior, he becomes a suspect in a murder investigation. His first case leads toward a conspiracy connected to his past.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays Sherlock, Dónal Finn plays James Moriarty, and Zine Tseng is also among the lead cast. Rather than build around familiar investigations by a fully formed detective, the series makes Holmes’s youth, his history and his first encounter with Moriarty central to the story. Amazon describes it as an “irreverent, action-laden mystery.” About Amazon’s announcement lays out the premise and release details.

What makes this version of Holmes different?

Action and momentum over a restrained mystery

Guy Ritchie directs and executive-produces the series, and its identity is built around brisk movement, action sequences, humor and smart dialogue. The Associated Press preview highlights that fast pace and the unusual choice to have Sherlock meet and befriend Moriarty early in life. The result is an origin-story adventure, not a procedural built around a new puzzle in each episode.

A relationship at the center of the story

The young Sherlock–Moriarty friendship gives the show a different dramatic engine from adaptations focused on the detective’s established rivalry with his eventual nemesis. Tom’s Guide reviewer Alix Blackburn praises the evolving dynamic as one of the series’ engaging elements, alongside its suspense and humor. That emphasis on how the pair first connect is a major part of the show’s reinterpretation.

A literary connection, not a promise of strict fidelity

Blackburn describes the series as based on Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes young adult book series. That makes Lane’s books a natural next step for viewers curious about the literary foundation, but the available descriptions do not establish that the show closely follows the books. Treat it as an adaptation with its own screen version of Sherlock’s early years.

Is Young Sherlock worth watching?

The strongest case for watching is its combination of a recognizable Holmes origin, energetic action and an early Sherlock–Moriarty relationship. Blackburn gave the series four out of five stars, calling it “a fast-paced, clever mystery-drama that has plenty of action, suspense and humor.” TechRadar’s Jasmine Valentine praised its casting and production design, describing it as “fresh, vibrantly energetic.” These are individual critics’ assessments, not guarantees that every viewer will respond the same way.

The principal caveat is the same quality that gives the series momentum: it moves quickly. Valentine says the pace can be very fast and that some viewers may guess the ending. If you prefer a measured, intricate mystery that lets clues unfold gradually, this may feel rushed; if you want an accessible adventure with Holmes in a new setting, its speed may be a plus.

How does it compare with other Sherlock adaptations?

What to compare Young Sherlock A more traditional Holmes approach
Tone Action-forward, humorous and irreverent, as described by Prime Video and reviewers. Can be more restrained and mystery-led; this is a contrast in style, not a ranking.
Pace Rapid, with action and suspense; TechRadar’s reviewer says it moves very quickly. Often allows more space for a procedural investigation and clue-following.
Focus A rebellious young Holmes in Oxford, his past and his early relationship with Moriarty. The established detective solving cases, often in a familiar Baker Street context.
Source connection Described by Tom’s Guide as based on Andrew Lane’s young adult book series; strict fidelity is not established. Varies by adaptation and source; no definitive adaptation ranking is established by these comparisons.

How many episodes are there, and where can you watch?

What do the ratings say?

At the time Rotten Tomatoes was accessed on October 8, 2026, Young Sherlock had an 84% Tomatometer from 50 reviews and an 82% Popcornmeter from 500+ ratings. These are a dated snapshot of dynamic aggregator figures, not a permanent score or a substitute for deciding whether the show’s fast, action-heavy style suits you.
