“Stopped making music” can mean a temporary break, a group hiatus, a breakup, a health-related interruption, or simply a long gap between releases. These ten cases cover all of those situations; several artists returned to recording or performing, so none should automatically be read as a permanent retirement.
What “stopped making music” means in these ten cases
The list behind these examples brings together very different career moments. Some artists stepped away by choice, some groups split or paused, and others went quiet between releases. The reasons below reflect what the cited accounts report; they should not be treated as definitive explanations of complex personal or band decisions.
Artists who took a break or went quiet
Adele: a planned pause, then a correction
Adele was reported as announcing a break in 2012, with time to live outside the demands of work as part of the explanation. But the five-year-hiatus remark was not a settled plan: contemporaneous CBS reporting said she publicly played it down, writing that she would be back in the studio after a few days off. That same report covered a separate vocal-cord problem and surgery; the health issue and the break should not be collapsed into one explanation. This was a pause, not evidence that Adele had permanently retired.
Shania Twain: a health-related interruption
The VoxVibe list article links Twain’s long gap to Lyme disease and dysphonia, and says rehabilitation came before her return to recording and touring. That account presents a health-related interruption rather than a voluntary decision to quit. The medical explanation is not independently established here, so it is best understood as the list article’s account, not a complete medical history.

Sam Smith: time away after years of work
The list article describes Smith taking time away after several years of nonstop work, wanting to go home and experience a more ordinary life. It says Smith returned to making music in 2017. The underlying interview was not independently checked, so the motive should be attributed to that account rather than treated as a direct, verified statement.
Lorde: space to work out what came next
The list article points to the four-year gap before Melodrama and describes Lorde as taking time for creative processing and discovery. That is different from an announcement of retirement: the gap was framed as time to decide what to say next. The original interview behind the account was not independently checked, so the explanation remains attributed to the list article.

Groups that broke up or paused
Soundgarden: breakup amid business pressures
Soundgarden broke up in 1998. The list article emphasizes business strain, and a Revolver interview recounts members reflecting on how the band becoming a business affected decisions. That supports business pressure as one reported factor, not as the sole cause of the breakup.
One Direction: a group pause as members pursued solo careers
The list article characterizes One Direction’s pause as coming after the group had run its course, with members seeking individual careers. Its explanation relies on an unnamed source quoted through Us Weekly, not a named band member speaking directly. It should therefore be treated as a reported account of the group’s decision, not a confirmed statement of every member’s motive.

Rage Against the Machine: a breakup, followed by reunions
The list article connects the 2000 breakup to Zack de la Rocha’s departure and creative differences. It also notes later reunions, so the split was not a permanent end to all band activity. The account offers a broad explanation, not proof that a single factor explains the decision.
Foo Fighters: a break, with the exact context unclear
The Foo Fighters did take a break. ABC News reported that Dave Grohl said the band would take one after finishing support for Wasting Light. The VoxVibe article places the break in a different album-tour context and mentions the later release of Concrete and Gold. Because those accounts do not line up on the timeline, the reliable takeaway here is the broad one: the band paused, rather than permanently stopped making music.

Big Time Rush: a hiatus, not a confirmed permanent breakup
The list article says Big Time Rush did not officially break up and describes its members pursuing individual projects, with uncertainty about when new group material might arrive. That is a hiatus, not confirmation that the band had permanently retired.
Pearl Jam: a slower period shaped by life events
Pearl Jam did not break up. The list article retrospectively connects the delay before Gigaton partly to life circumstances and the death of Chris Cornell, attributing that framing to bassist Jeff Ament. This is the article’s account of the delay, not a fully verified chronology or an established single cause.

Why the distinctions matter
A band breakup is not the same as a solo artist taking time off; a health-related interruption is not necessarily a voluntary hiatus; and a long interval between albums does not, by itself, establish that an artist stopped working. Here, the reported explanations range from health issues and fatigue to creative differences, business pressure, solo ambitions, personal discovery, and life events. Treating every case as permanent retirement would overstate what the accounts establish.
