Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Coverage describes audience groans after at least two separate Saturday Night Live Weekend Update jokes about Jeffrey Epstein. The likeliest match for the headline is Colin Jost’s March 7, 2026 joke about Epstein’s ranch: a March 8 report said the audience groaned and that co-anchor Michael Che ad-libbed, “Really bumming them out there.” A later joke, on May 9, also drew reported groans, but it had a different premise.
Which Weekend Update joke is the headline about?
There are two distinct segments in the coverage, so the headline alone does not identify one with certainty. The March 7 segment is the likeliest match: a March 8 Daily Beast report describes Jost making a joke about Epstein’s ranch and says the studio audience groaned. The report also attributes the reaction, “Really bumming them out there,” to Che. The Daily Beast’s March 8 report is the source for these details.
A separate Weekend Update joke aired May 9. A May 10 Daily Beast report says Jost drew groans with a joke responding to Epstein’s suicide note. The Times of India/ETimes video-page summary characterized the audience response to the dark joke as “shocked groans.” That later coverage is about a different joke, not confirmation of the March segment’s premise. The Daily Beast’s May 10 report and the Times of India/ETimes summary describe the May item.
How the two jokes differ
| Weekend Update segment | Reported premise | Reported response |
|---|---|---|
| March 7, 2026 | Jost joke about Epstein’s ranch | Audience groans; the Daily Beast report attributes “Really bumming them out there” to Che. |
| May 9, 2026 | Jost joke responding to Epstein’s suicide note | Groans reported; ETimes describes them as “shocked groans.” |
The descriptions of the audience response are qualitative. The available coverage does not give a measurement of how many people groaned or establish that the reaction was unusually large.

What the reports establish—and what they do not
The reporting identifies Jost as the comedian delivering both jokes and Che as the co-anchor who made the quoted March ad-lib. It does not provide an audience count, a sound-level measurement, or another statistic that would substantiate “big” as a measured reaction. The May phrase “shocked groans” is the publisher’s description, not a separate on-air quotation from a named audience member.
The available reports do not conclusively show which segment the original headline intended. If it refers to the ranch joke, the March date and Che’s response are the relevant details; if it refers to the suicide-note joke, the May date and premise apply. Keeping the clips separate avoids attributing one segment’s subject or reaction to the other.
