Written and directed by Elliot Tuttle, the film turns that charged premise into a tense, largely two-person conversation about shame, loneliness and the limits of sympathy. Its route to audiences included festival rejections, an Edinburgh premiere and reported walkouts, but those events do not establish a single reason for any festival’s decision.
What is Blue Film about?
Aaron Eagle, played by Kieron Moore, is an adult gay camboy and sex worker. When he meets a client, Hank Grant (Reed Birney), he recognizes him as a former middle-school teacher. Hank had been fired after attempting to sexually assault another student when that student was 12; Aaron was not the victim.
The fictional drama uses their reunion as the basis for a difficult encounter rather than a conventional thriller built around action. The Guardian describes it as primarily a tense conversation between two people. The premise asks viewers to listen to a morally compromised character without mistaking that attention for approval of his past conduct.
Why has the film drawn controversy?
The subject matter deliberately places taboo desire, past harm and adult sexuality in close proximity. That creates discomfort, but discomfort alone does not explain every festival or distributor response. Tuttle has described conversations with distributors who worried that audiences or broadcasters would reject the film. In a March 2026 feature, he recalled feedback including: “There has been feedback of, ‘We really like the movie, but we can’t play it. Our audience won’t appreciate this,’”

Actor Kieron Moore characterized the film as demanding rather than accidental viewing: “Blue Film’s not a movie that you stumble upon,” he said in the same feature. These are attributed accounts of the filmmakers’ experience, not evidence that all distributors or viewers responded alike.
How did Blue Film reach audiences?
Tuttle has spoken about repeated festival rejections, including submissions to Sundance and SXSW. Vanity Fair’s 2025 reporting describes his criticism of festival risk aversion; it does not establish why any named festival declined the film. The exact number of rejections has not been verified.

The film premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in August 2025. Later reporting described walkouts and a tense screening, but no verified count of people who left has been published in the material available. Those reports point to varied reactions, not a measurable consensus about the film.
Tuttle told PinkNews: “I don’t think a filmmaker makes a film for a festival screening committee, they make it for an audience to see it, so I’m happy that an audience can see the film.” The film’s festival path is therefore part of its public story, but it should not be reduced to a simple claim that rejection proved either its artistic merit or its unacceptability.

Who made the film, and how was it produced?
Blue Film is Tuttle’s feature debut. Vanity Fair reported that the project grew from his journaling about adolescent sexuality into a one-location, two-character idea, then developed into a character drama with psychological-thriller elements. The magazine also reported that the feature was shot over two intensive weeks.
Mark Duplass, who Vanity Fair identified as a mentor to Tuttle for about a decade, served as consulting producer. A March 2026 Entertainment Weekly feature republished by Yahoo reported a $50,000 grant from the Duplass Brothers’ foundation that helped Tuttle secure a discounted Los Angeles rental home for production. That figure describes the reported grant, not the film’s total budget.

What themes does the film emphasize?
Tuttle has described loneliness as central to the film’s development: “That was the starting point, and it really became a film about loneliness or how we negotiate our own loneliness,” he told PinkNews. The film’s confined conversation gives that idea a dramatic form: Aaron and Hank must contend with what each wants from the encounter and what the past makes impossible to ignore.
PinkNews reports that the characters discuss The Handmaid’s Tale and that the final scene uses a red colour wash. Those details invite interpretation, but the symbolism is not settled fact; the director’s comments about loneliness offer a clearer account of the theme he has named.

When and where was Blue Film released?
Release information is territorial and date-specific. A March 2026 feature reported US theatrical dates of May 8 in New York City and May 15 in Los Angeles, with Obscured Releasing identified as the US distributor. The Guardian and PinkNews reported a UK and Ireland cinema release beginning September 11, 2026.
These reports establish theatrical rollout dates, not current showtimes or availability on streaming, rental, disc or other home-media formats. Check a local cinema or distributor listing for current screenings. The Guardian lists a runtime of 82 minutes, while Slant Magazine’s review metadata lists 85 minutes; the discrepancy is unresolved, so neither figure should be treated here as definitive.
