In 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 3, “Final Approach,” Athena must try to land a damaged plane after a midair collision, while Bobby coordinates help from the ground and Buck gets him involved. The episode preview shows the 118 preparing to shut down the 110 freeway and clear a landing space.
What happens in “Final Approach”?
The October 8, 2024 TV Insider preview identifies “Final Approach” as Season 8, Episode 3. It is the third part of the show’s “bee-nado” emergency: bees contribute to a midair collision involving Athena’s plane, leaving her with a damaged aircraft and a pilot who has suffered a heart attack.
The episode logline, as reproduced by TV Insider, sets out the stakes: “Athena’s only chance of surviving and saving everyone on the flight is to attempt to land the plane before it crashes and call on the 118 for help.”
How do Athena, Bobby, Buck, and the 118 work together?
Athena handles the immediate emergency
Athena is the one who has to attempt the landing. She asks Bobby, “You got a runway in your back pocket?” The preview’s answer is an improvised plan rather than an airport runway: the 118 can shut down the 110 freeway and clear space for the aircraft.

Bobby coordinates help from the ground
Bobby supports Athena remotely as the emergency unfolds. Their brief exchange gives the scene its personal edge: Athena says, “I love you,” and Bobby replies, “Tell me in person.”
Buck gets Bobby engaged
Buck’s part is to reach Bobby. In the preceding episode, Bobby is working as a technical adviser on a television set and cannot be reached because his phone is off. Buck goes to alert him, bringing Bobby into the unfolding crisis.
