Frank Fritz, the longtime American Pickers co-host, suffered a stroke in July 2022. A longtime friend later said he never fully recovered. Fritz died at age 60 on September 30, 2024, in Davenport, Iowa.
What happened to Frank Fritz?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Fritz suffered a stroke in July 2022. In an account reported by the Associated Press, longtime friend Annette Oberlander said he never fully recovered. That is a friend’s account, not a medical provider’s prognosis; public reporting does not establish specific symptoms, treatment or recovery milestones.
Fritz had co-hosted American Pickers with Mike Wolfe for more than a decade. The HISTORY Channel series followed the pair as they searched for antiques and collectibles, and a tribute recalled Fritz’s interest in vintage motorcycles and bikes.
What did the guardianship reporting say?
Following the stroke, a guardianship petition and emergency order were reported by the Des Moines Register and republished by Yahoo. The petition said Fritz’s decision-making capacity was impaired, and the judge cited a physician’s letter in the emergency order. These reports describe a particular legal period after the stroke; they do not establish a complete or lifelong assessment of his capacity.

When and where did Frank Fritz die?
Fritz died on September 30, 2024, at age 60, at a hospice facility in Davenport, Iowa, according to the Associated Press. The initial HISTORY and American Pickers statement confirmed his death but did not disclose a cause. Later reporting by The Independent, attributing details to TMZ’s review of the death certificate, described the immediate cause as “late sequelae of cerebral infarction,” with cerebral vascular disease as the underlying cause and aortic stenosis as a contributing factor. Those details are certificate-based reporting, not an independent review of Fritz’s full medical record.
Why the distinction matters
The public accounts establish a stroke in July 2022, a friend’s statement that Fritz never fully recovered, and his death in 2024. They do not provide a detailed clinical account of his health between the stroke and his death. Nor should the guardianship reports be treated as a medical diagnosis or used to infer more than the specific legal findings they describe.
