Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is a planned four-part Western film series about the American West, with Costner as its writer, director, producer and star. Its 2024 trailers offered a first look at the project as Costner’s commitments to it were being discussed alongside his departure from Yellowstone—but the available reporting does not establish Horizon as the sole reason he left the series.
What the Horizon trailer shows
ABC News covered the first trailer on February 26, 2024, describing it as a glimpse of the Old West and a star-studded cast. The outlet covered another trailer on May 17, identifying Costner in it. Those are two separate trailer reports, not evidence that the May trailer was the first look at the film.
The trailers introduce Horizon: An American Saga as a Western on a large, multi-part scale. CBS described the project as a four-part film series about the American West. Costner is not only its lead performer: he also wrote, directed and produced it. ABC News’ February 2024 trailer report and its May 2024 report cover the two previews.
What Horizon is—and Costner’s role in it
Horizon: An American Saga is a Western film project conceived as four parts. CBS Mornings described Costner as the project’s writer, director, producer and star. That combination makes it a major creative undertaking for him, not simply another acting role. CBS Mornings’ interview with Costner discusses the series and his involvement.

Did Costner leave Yellowstone to make Horizon?
Horizon was part of the conversation around Costner’s departure from Yellowstone, but “ditched” makes the connection sound more conclusive than the reporting supports. In a June 2024 CBS News interview, Costner said Horizon always came second to Yellowstone and said of the show’s team, “They were busy; they had a lot to do.” CBS also reported that he would consider returning as John Dutton if the story went the right way. These are Costner’s account and stated position; they do not establish Horizon as the single cause of his exit. CBS News’ interview and report provides that context.
The Associated Press likewise quoted Costner saying, “Yellowstone was really important in my life.” Its May 2024 report described Horizon as self-financed and noted that Costner had scripts ready for parts three and four. That account underscores the scale of his commitment while leaving the precise causes of the television departure more complicated than a simple choice between projects. The Associated Press report from Cannes covers those remarks.

What was planned for Horizon’s release?
Release dates reported in 2024 should be read as plans from that time, not as a current schedule. On May 19, 2024, the Associated Press reported that Warner Bros. planned to release Chapter One theatrically on June 28 and Chapter Two on August 16, 2024. The same report said Costner had scripts ready for the third and fourth parts. Those historical plans do not establish the films’ present release, streaming or home-video availability.
