The film can be compared with the real Alaska Airlines Flight 261 disaster, but that flight crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 2000, killing all 88 people aboard. Its cause and outcome were not the same as the film’s.
Was Flight 277 real?
No. Flight 277 is the fictional flight at the center of the 2012 film Flight. The screenplay depicts pilot William “Whip” Whitaker and the airline SouthJet as part of its dramatic story. The successful emergency landing belongs to the film’s plot, not to the record of a real Flight 277 accident.
That distinction matters because a real aviation disaster is often mentioned alongside the film: Alaska Airlines Flight 261. The National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation documents Flight 261’s accident and its fatal outcome; the screenplay establishes the fictional events shown in Flight.
Was Whip Whitaker a real pilot?
No. Whip Whitaker is a fictional character in Flight, not a pilot identified in the Flight 261 investigation. The NTSB record concerns the crew and passengers aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 261; it does not identify Whitaker or connect him to that accident.

What happened to Alaska Airlines Flight 261?
Alaska Airlines Flight 261 was a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 traveling on January 31, 2000. At about 4:21 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, it crashed into the Pacific Ocean about 2.7 miles north of Anacapa Island, California. All 88 people aboard died: two pilots, three cabin crewmembers and 83 passengers. The NTSB investigation summary records the date, location, aircraft and casualties.
What caused Flight 261 to crash?
The NTSB found that Flight 261 lost pitch control after the failure of the acme nut threads in the horizontal stabilizer trim system’s jackscrew assembly. In its probable-cause finding, the board described “a loss of airplane pitch control resulting from the in-flight failure of the horizontal stabilizer trim system jackscrew assembly’s acme nut threads.” It attributed the thread failure to excessive wear from insufficient lubrication of the jackscrew assembly, as detailed in the final accident report.

The jackscrew assembly was part of the system used to adjust the airplane’s horizontal stabilizer, which helps control pitch—the aircraft’s nose-up or nose-down angle. This was a flight-control-system failure, not a generic engine failure.
The NTSB also identified Alaska Airlines’ extended lubrication interval and extended end-play check interval, and the FAA’s approval of those extensions, as contributing factors. The board noted that the MD-80 lacked a fail-safe mechanism to prevent the catastrophic effects of total loss of the acme nut threads. How does the film differ from the real accident?

Flight 261 is a useful real-world comparison because both accounts involve an aircraft-control emergency. That does not make the flights, their causes or their outcomes the same.

Flight 261 is often presented as a real-world parallel to the film, but the available creator interview and official accident records do not establish exactly how much, if any, of the screenplay was drawn from that specific accident. The Fresh Air interview with director Robert Zemeckis discusses the film but does not verify a direct Flight 261 inspiration claim. It is more accurate to call the accident a comparison than to state that it was definitively the film’s source.
