Keplinger wants Zubak to join him against Elena. Zubak does not: he kills Keplinger instead. Guards release Zubak and take him back to the palace, where he and Elena reunite sexually, with others—including Elena’s husband—present.
1. The four-month jump reveals a regime still managing bad news
The episode opens after a four-month time jump. Reports about the cobalt mines and unrest cause anxiety, while officials present events in a positive light. The Daily Beast’s recap reports that the government describes the Faban Corridor reunification as having brought “only love”; that is a line relayed by the recap, not an independently verified transcript.

The gap has not brought stability. Elena’s trade deal with China threatens local sugar production, factories are closing, and Westgate workers are protesting. The episode guide also flags a tragic accident and Elena’s response to it, but the available descriptions do not establish enough detail to specify the accident’s outcome.
2. Keplinger is imprisoned beneath the palace
Keplinger, Elena’s former chancellor and political rival, is alive and held in a prison below the palace. His apparent life away from the center of power is a public fiction: according to The Daily Beast’s recap, guards bring him out to record videos that support Elena’s preferred account of events.

Zubak finds a book by Keplinger in his cell and is later taken to see him. Keplinger uses the meeting to propose an alliance. The discovery turns the public story of Keplinger’s absence into a picture of direct control: Elena’s regime has not merely pushed a rival out of sight; it is holding him close and using recorded appearances to shape what people believe.
3. Agnes is pressured over Oskar
Agnes’s son, Oskar, now lives in the palace under Elena’s watch. Agnes receives messages from people seeking information about life inside the palace and offering safety for Oskar in America. She keeps her vow to Elena, according to The Daily Beast’s account.

The offer does not make Agnes’s position simple or safe. Oskar’s presence in the palace and the promise of protection abroad put her under pressure, rather than presenting her with a consequence-free choice.
4. Zubak refuses Keplinger’s offer
Keplinger tries to turn Zubak against Elena, but Zubak remains unwilling to join him. The reported actions are clear; the precise balance of loyalty and political calculation behind them is not. One reading is that Zubak’s attachment to Elena outweighs Keplinger’s appeal. Another is that Keplinger simply fails to persuade him. The episode establishes the refusal, not a definitive account of Zubak’s inner motive.
5. Zubak kills Keplinger
Zubak kills Keplinger, as reported by both The Daily Beast and Vanity Fair. The former chancellor’s attempt to recruit him ends in violence rather than escape or a new alliance.
The killing makes Zubak’s choice visible to Elena, but it also exposes the danger inside her circle: the regime’s power struggle is not confined to public messaging or street unrest.

6. The guards release Zubak and return him to Elena
After Keplinger’s death, guards release Zubak and bring him back to the palace, according to The Daily Beast’s recap. The episode does not present him as being punished for the killing. His return links the prison plot to Elena’s personal world, while leaving the violent outcome in full view.
7. Elena and Nicholas go to meet factory workers
Rotten Tomatoes’ episode guide notes that Elena and Nicholas go outside the palace to meet factory workers. Ready Steady Cut connects the unrest to factory closures and the trade deal that threatens local sugar production. The available episode-guide synopsis does not describe the visit’s staging or dialogue, so those details should not be read into the account.
The visit places Elena’s public response alongside the episode’s other signs of instability: troubled industry, worker protest and a government trying to control how the crisis is understood.
8. Elena and Zubak reunite in public
The episode closes with Elena and Zubak’s sexual reunion. The Daily Beast reports that others in the palace witness it, including Elena’s husband. The scene is both a relationship turn and a display of Elena’s volatility within the palace.

Quick Recap
What the episode leaves in tension
- Public account versus hidden reality: Officials present a hopeful story even as Keplinger is secretly imprisoned and the country faces unrest.
- Loyalty versus calculation: Zubak kills Keplinger, but the sources establish his action more clearly than his full motive.
- Intimacy versus state power: Elena and Zubak’s reunion is personal, yet its witnesses and palace setting make it part of the regime’s visible power dynamics.
