The Spire in the Woods was announced as a film project in 2019 under the title The Bells. The sources available do not confirm whether it remains in development, has begun filming, or has been canceled, and they establish no release date.
What was announced about the adaptation?
On February 6, 2019, Variety reported that Amblin Partners had acquired movie rights to Tony Lunedi’s The Spire in the Woods. The report used the alternate title The Bells and named Roy Lee and Jon Berg as producers through Vertigo Entertainment, with Liya Gao overseeing the project for Vertigo and Josh Dove as executive producer. Those are the credits reported at the time, not confirmation that the same people remain attached.

The announced source was a ten-part Reddit story first published in 2013. ComicBook.com’s February 9, 2019 coverage, which attributed the adaptation news to Variety, says Lunedi published the story as a book in 2017. It describes a teenager who suspects a friend’s suicide may be connected to a local supernatural legend.
Is the film still in development, and is there a release date?
Its current status is unconfirmed. The 2019 rights announcement establishes that the project was set up, but it does not establish continued development, production, a distributor, or a release date. The sources available do not establish whether the project was canceled, remains in development, or changed hands.

A GeekChamp page dated January 8, 2026 presents itself as a status update, but its timing claims conflict and it gives unsupported assertions about a production pause, funding, filming, and continuing creative work. Those claims are not reliable confirmation of the film’s status.

No release or viewing option for the adaptation is established by the available sources. There is likewise no confirmed film, streaming service, or home-video edition to seek out. Readers interested in the story itself can look for Lunedi’s reported 2017 book edition; check a current listing for availability and format. The book is source material, not a film release.
