Who was Toni, Gerry Turner’s first wife?
Toni was the person Turner married before becoming the lead of ABC’s The Golden Bachelor. ABC’s 2023 announcement identifies her as his high-school sweetheart and says they married in 1974. The couple had two daughters, Angie and Jenny, and two granddaughters, Charlee and Payton. ABC’s announcement describes Turner and Toni as together for 43 years.
What happened to Toni?
Toni died in 2017 after suddenly becoming ill. In a 2023 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Turner said a bacterial infection affected her kidneys and liver and that she died on July 15, 2017. Those medical details are Turner’s account as reported in the interview, not a separate medical finding. Read the interview.
How has Turner described their marriage?
Turner has spoken warmly about the relationship. In the Los Angeles Times interview, he said, “I really had a wonderful marriage,” and recalled, “I think back on 43 years that were happy and productive.”

He also described the grief that followed Toni’s death and how it shaped his thoughts about dating. At first, he worried about comparing someone new with Toni. Over time, he came to see later relationships as belonging to a different stage of life, with different goals—not as replacements for his first marriage.
How does Toni’s story relate to The Golden Bachelor?
Turner became the first lead of ABC’s The Golden Bachelor in 2023, seeking love later in life after Toni’s death. His story on the program followed a long marriage and bereavement; it did not erase the importance he placed on that earlier relationship. ABC’s original announcement said episodes would be available on Hulu the day after broadcast, but that 2023 release plan does not establish current streaming availability.
