The Ruzek-centered Season 12 storyline awaiting resolution is his father Bob’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis and the care decisions it forces on Ruzek and his family. Season 13 revisited the issue after Ruzek spent time away from work, but available reporting does not establish that Bob’s story reached a final answer.

What was Ruzek’s Season 12 cliffhanger?

Ruzek learned that his father, Bob, had Alzheimer’s. He wanted Bob to live with him, Burgess, and their daughter Makayla rather than move into a facility. That decision sets up a personal conflict about care, family responsibilities, and what Ruzek can manage at home; it is not simply a medical storyline.

The timing also matters for Ruzek and Burgess. They married in the Season 12 finale, although viewers did not see their vows. Showrunner Gwen Sigan said the wedding choice felt true to the couple: “It seemed like this was the most them, this felt like Ruzek and Burgess.” Their marriage is relevant to the family decisions ahead, but it does not settle Bob’s condition or where he will receive care. Parade’s interview with Sigan and TV Insider’s finale coverage discuss those developments.

How did Season 13 revisit Bob’s condition?

Ruzek missed several Season 13 episodes. In a January 2026 interview, Sigan explained that he had taken time away to be with his father. She said his return would offer more detail about what Bob’s condition meant for Ruzek, including how it affected decisions involving Burgess and their family. TV Insider’s January interview and TV Guide’s Season 13 midseason preview covered the planned continuation.

A March 2026 report placed Ruzek’s return in the March 11 episode and said the show would continue exploring how Bob’s condition shaped his choices. That indicates the storyline was picked up again, not that its central care question was definitively answered. TV Insider’s report on his return describes the story’s continuation.

Is Bob’s storyline resolved?

The available coverage does not confirm a final outcome for Bob’s care or a definitive endpoint for the Alzheimer’s storyline. The clearest supported description is that it remains an ongoing family thread: Ruzek has been shown making time for his father, and the showrunner said the consequences for his family decisions would continue to unfold.

Which other Season 12 cliffhanger can be confused with Ruzek’s?

The finale also ended with a separate, larger Intelligence Unit conflict. Voight’s clash with Deputy Chief Reid led to the unit being dismantled. Sigan described the Voight–Reid story as an old-school cliffhanger and said she wanted to carry its next beat into the finale rather than leave it wholly for Season 13. Later coverage described the team being put back together. Sigan’s Parade interview addresses the finale’s structure, while TV Guide’s finale interview covers Voight and the wedding.

These are distinct threads: Bob’s illness puts pressure on Ruzek’s family and care choices; Reid’s actions create an institutional crisis for Intelligence. The unit cliffhanger should not be mistaken for the unresolved question at the heart of Ruzek’s personal arc.
