Spoiler warning: Zoe Powell’s apparent death at the end of “The Promise” is a cliffhanger, not a confirmed death. Shemar Moore said Powell is an increasingly important part of the team, and the next episode follows Hondo and Hicks as they search for her.
What happens to Powell in “The Promise”?
In the first part of the Season 7 premiere, Powell realizes that local officer Gabriel Bautista has taken the thermobaric bomb. TV Insider’s account of the episode’s ending says Bautista attacks her, and she appears dead when the episode cuts off. The scene leaves her fate unresolved rather than confirming that she has died.

“The Promise” is listed as Season 7, Episode 1. It aired on CBS on February 16, 2024, and Apple TV lists its runtime as 40 minutes. The episode’s larger mission brings Hondo’s team back to Mexico City to retrieve a fugitive who escaped him a decade earlier, a mission tied to an old promise. Did Shemar Moore say Powell is coming back?
Moore, who plays Hondo, told TV Insider that “Powell is a much more intricate part of the show and the team.” He also said, “She just brings a fresh, new dynamic.” His comments point toward Powell remaining important to the story, but they do not establish a later-season appearance record or confirm every detail of her fate.

Moore also described the team’s response to Bautista: “We gotta band together and go get the job done, and we do it in a very cool, action-packed way.” That is his description of the next installment’s action, not a definitive statement about the outcome of the cliffhanger. How does the cliffhanger continue?
“The Promise” is the first half of a two-part premiere. The follow-up, “Peace Talks,” aired February 23, 2024. Its official synopsis says Hondo and Hicks search for Powell, who is missing along with the bomb, while Deacon and Tan assist from Los Angeles. That confirms the danger carries directly into part two, while the official synopsis describes Powell as missing rather than declaring her dead. CBS’s “Peace Talks” announcement.

The evidence supports a careful distinction: Powell appears to die in the final moments of the first episode, but the episode leaves the question open. Moore’s interview signals that she matters to the team and discusses the squad’s pursuit of Bautista; the official part-two synopsis independently confirms a search for her. Neither source, on its own, is a season-by-season record of her appearances.
Moore separately described the premiere as a two-episode arc in a 2024 Parade interview. His comments there about the season’s order and its then-final-season framing are historical statements from that period, not an update on the show’s current status. Parade interview with Shemar Moore.
