The episode’s central pregnancy reveal belongs to Ellen MacKenzie: while her sister Janet is dying, Ellen tells her she is pregnant with Brian Fraser’s child and promises to name a daughter after her. That promise connects the reveal to Jamie’s sister Jenny, whose full name is Janet. It is separate from Julia’s pregnancy in the prequel’s other storyline. Together, the stories add painful context to what Claire understood about her family; they do not, on the evidence available, establish that her account of her past has been retconned.
What is Ellen’s pregnancy twist?
In “Rabbits Don’t Swim,” Season 2, Episode 3, Ellen reveals her pregnancy to Janet as Janet is dying. Ellen promises that if the baby is a girl, she will give her Janet’s name. Harriet Slater, who plays Ellen, described the moment as the first time Janet learns the news—and the point when viewers learn it too. Slater said Ellen stays true to the promise. (TV Insider, October 2, 2026)
The promise makes the later connection legible: Ellen and Brian’s daughter is Jenny, Jamie’s sister, whose full name is Janet. The scene therefore gives the namesake relationship an emotional origin in Ellen’s farewell to her sister, rather than presenting it as a coincidence.
How is Julia’s pregnancy different?
Julia’s pregnancy is a separate plot thread, not the pregnancy Ellen reveals to Janet. Julia is displaced into the past, and her pregnancy increases the danger she faces there. Hermione Corfield told TheWrap that Julia takes drastic measures to protect the baby because it would not be safe in the house if the pregnancy were discovered. (TheWrap, 2025)

Does the prequel change Claire’s story?
Blood of My Blood follows the love stories of Jamie’s parents and Claire’s parents, according to the Associated Press. (Associated Press, August 8, 2025) Its Julia-and-Henry storyline can make Claire’s understanding of her own childhood more tragic: Claire believed she was an orphan, while her parents had been alive earlier in the timeline. Corfield described that painful gap between what Claire believed and what the audience learns about her parents. (TVLine, July 21, 2025)
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts framed the premise as a question—“What if they didn’t die in the car crash?”—and said Claire’s narration need not be contradicted because she did not know the full story. (CinemaBlend, July 17, 2025) That supports reading the prequel as an expansion of Claire’s incomplete knowledge, not as confirmation that the established account has been rewritten. The cast and showrunner explain the emotional and narrative premise; that is not, by itself, a definitive ruling on every question of canon.

Why the two pregnancies matter together
The pregnancies serve different purposes in the prequel’s paired family histories. Ellen’s reveal points forward to Jenny and gives Jamie’s family a specific act of remembrance. Julia’s pregnancy is an immediate source of vulnerability within Claire’s parents’ story. Neither twist alone changes what Claire knew; the broader effect is to show viewers family history that Claire herself could not have known.
The Associated Press also noted that the prequel has no direct prequel novels to follow. Its account of the parents’ stories is therefore a television expansion rather than an adaptation of a dedicated prequel book. (Associated Press, August 8, 2025)
