Spoilers for the finale of Manhunt. After the trial, Edwin Stanton’s fight shifts from securing justice for Abraham Lincoln’s assassination to defending Reconstruction. He refuses to leave the War Department when President Andrew Johnson tries to remove him. The finale then jumps to 1869: Ulysses S. Grant appoints Stanton to the Supreme Court, but Stanton dies four days later, before he can take his seat.

What happens to Stanton after the trial?

The courtroom victory does not end Stanton’s struggle. In the finale, Johnson’s attempt to replace him becomes a threat to the continuation of Lincoln’s Reconstruction policy. Stanton refuses to give way and barricades himself inside the War Department, holding his position for more than three months. The confrontation turns the story from a prosecution into a contest over who will direct the country’s postwar course. TV Insider’s finale coverage describes the political fight and its consequences.

Johnson became the first U.S. president to be impeached after trying to remove Stanton. The Senate fell one vote short of removing Johnson from office, according to TV Insider. Stanton’s resistance therefore becomes a pivotal episode in the struggle over executive power, even though the finale does not present it as a complete victory for Reconstruction.

Does Stanton become a Supreme Court justice?

He receives the appointment, but he does not serve. The finale’s closing timeline says Grant appoints Stanton to the Supreme Court on December 20, 1869. Stanton dies on Christmas Eve, four days later, at age 55, before taking the seat. The appointment gives him a final recognition of his public service, while his death makes the prospect of continuing that work painfully brief. TV Insider reports the dates and age.

Actor Tobias Menzies, who portrays Stanton, called the outcome a success “with an asterisk.” He said Stanton hoped to keep working for land and voting rights for freed slaves, but the finale’s ending does not suggest that those aims had been secured. Its final note is deliberately mixed: Stanton has resisted Johnson and earned a new appointment, yet the causes he championed remain unfinished. Menzies’s comments were reported by TV Insider.

What does the finale say about the trial?

The trial is the culmination of Stanton’s effort to pursue justice for Lincoln’s assassination and the other planned attacks. Apple’s official listing describes Stanton as risking his personal and professional standing to bring about what it calls “the trial of the century.” The episode, “The Final Act,” is listed as the season-one finale, released April 19, 2024, with a runtime of 54 minutes. Apple TV’s episode listing provides the synopsis and episode details.

The finale’s account of Jefferson Davis is more qualified than the series’ broad “Grand Conspiracy” framing might suggest. It says the court did not find the evidence sufficient to establish Davis’s connection to the plot, even though the judge believed Davis had ordered the assassination. In other words, the episode distinguishes suspicion and judicial belief from proof accepted by the court.

The finale recap reports that Mary Surratt, David Herold, Lewis Powell, and George Atzerodt were sentenced to death, while Edward Spangler received life imprisonment. Those outcomes concern the trial as depicted in the series; the show’s portrayal should not be taken to mean that every suspected participant’s role was established in court.

How the show compares with the historical account

Manhunt is a historical drama based on James L. Swanson’s book Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer. The Associated Press reports that Booth was found 12 days after the assassination, hiding in a barn, and describes the series as dramatizing the pursuit and trial that followed. The AP’s series coverage gives that broader context.

TIME’s historical summary says Union cavalry found Booth in a Virginia tobacco barn on April 26, 1865. After Booth refused to come out, the barn was set on fire and he was shot. TIME also reports that Powell, Atzerodt, Herold, and Surratt were convicted and executed in July 1865, while Dr. Samuel Mudd received a life sentence. TIME’s account of the series and its historical frame provides those comparisons.

These historical summaries help distinguish the documented broad outline from the show’s dramatized scenes. They do not provide a primary archival account of every moment in the finale, so specific dialogue and staging are best understood as dramatic presentation rather than a scene-by-scene historical record. The courtroom outcomes also should be kept separate from the show’s larger conspiracy claims: a drama can portray suspicion or political belief without establishing that a particular allegation was proved at trial.

What the ending means

Stanton’s ending is neither a simple triumph nor a defeat. He withstands Johnson’s effort to dislodge him and is appointed to the nation’s highest court, but he dies before serving and before the rights he hoped to advance are fully realized. The finale closes on the gap between winning a political battle and completing the work of Reconstruction.
