There is no confirmed Stargate Universe Season 3. Syfy cancelled the series after two seasons in 2010, and its final episode aired in 2011 with the Destiny crew’s story unresolved. A later Stargate project associated with Amazon MGM was separate from SGU; its reported status does not amount to a Season 3 update.
Was Stargate Universe cancelled?
Yes. Syfy announced on December 16, 2010, that it would end Stargate Universe after two seasons. The final ten episodes were still scheduled to air in spring 2011, according to GateWorld’s report on the cancellation.
The series ran for 40 episodes. Its cancellation came after Season Two had been filmed, but the writers had not designed “Gauntlet” as a conventional, fully resolving series finale.
Why did the finale leave the story open?
Executive producer Brad Wright later explained that the finale offered emotional closure in case the series was not renewed while leaving room to continue its larger story. The crew enters stasis for Destiny’s journey, while Eli is left to deal with the last pod.

Wright recalled, “When we saw the Tuesday night ratings on Syfy we knew it might be the end.” He also said the final meal let the characters come together as a team before they went “off into the void.” In a 2022 interview, he summed up the cancellation: “We were all disappointed. I wish we had at least one more season.” These comments are collected in GateWorld’s report on Wright and the finale and its 2022 interview report.
Does the separate Stargate project mean SGU is coming back?
No. Amazon MGM’s franchise announcement described a new Stargate series for Prime Video and named Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi as consulting producers. It did not describe the project as a continuation of Stargate Universe. Amazon MGM’s announcement concerns the wider franchise, not an SGU third season.

On June 2, 2026, GateWorld reported that Amazon MGM was not moving forward with Martin Gero’s Stargate revival. That update also concerns the separate franchise project; it neither announces an SGU Season 3 nor establishes that no Stargate project could be developed in the future. See GateWorld’s June 2026 report.
